Hearn Hustles from 21st to Win in DIRTcar Nationals Finale

Sheppard captures the Big Gator for his second career DIRTcar Nationals title

By Mike Mallett

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb 20, 2016 – Brett Hearn did the improbable on Saturday night. The veteran driver from Sussex, N.J., raced his way from the 21st starting position in the 50-lap DIRTcar Nationals Super DIRTcar Series finale to take his 23rd career win at the Volusia Speedway Park.

“We got a huge favor tonight that we didn’t really expect in that we had to run the consi,” said Hearn. “We got some laps out there after the track dried out. After we ran the consi we made some really great decisions. Hats off to my crew. We really struggled this week. We changed everything we could think of including stuff today, unbelievable stuff. These guys were up early working their butts off and so this is meaningful for all the guys that came down with me this year. We persevered.”

Hearn won the battle but it was Sheppard who won the war as he captured his second career DIRTcar Nationals title. Throughout the four days of Big Block action, Sheppard never finished outside the top five. He finished fifth on opening night and then took home a win before a second and a third to conclude the week.

Laubach Battles Back at DIRTcar Nationals to Score Super DIRTcar Series Victory

Matt Sheppard battles late, comes .117 seconds short of second straight win

By Mike Mallett

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb 19, 2016 – Rick Laubach watched the feature win slip away late in Thursday night’s 30-lap Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified feature event at the Volusia Speedway Park. He gave up the lead in slower traffic and eventually finished in third behind Matt Sheppard and Larry Wight.

On Friday night of the DIRTcar Nationals, Laubach had a serious case of Deja Vu. He was leading late in the race with Sheppard closing fast as he battled heavy traffic. Unlike the night before, Laubach wasn’t tentative in traffic and he made the moves he had to in order to grab a Friday night win for the second year in a row. It’s his third career win in Florida and it came by mere feet over a hard charging Sheppard.

Sheppard Wins DIRTcar Nationals Barn Burner on Thursday Night

Takes new team to Victory Lane in only the second start

By Mike Mallett

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 18, 2016 – Thursday night’s 30-lap Modified DIRTcar Nationals main-event at Volusia Speedway Park came down to a battle between two of the best Super DIRTcar Series drivers in the Northeast. Matt Sheppard and Larry Wight duked it out for the final 10 laps of the feature race with Sheppard coming out on top at the checkered flag.

Sheppard’s win came behind the wheel of his self-owned No. 9s Bicknell. The Waterloo, N.Y., driver split with Heinke-Baldwin Racing over the winter after a successful 2015 that saw him win the series title. This forced Sheppard to go in a different direction this year. Sheppard chose to start his own team and it quickly paid dividends as he marched to his seventh career DIRTcar Nationals triumph.

Fuller Flies High in DIRTcar Nationals Opener for Big-Block Modifieds

Scores his first win in Modified action at Volusia since 2007

By Mike Mallett

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 17, 2016 – For the first time since 2007, Tim Fuller parked his Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified on the front stretch at the Volusia Speedway Park as a feature winner. The Edwards, N.Y., driver drove his familiar No. 19 to the win in the opening 30-lap feature for the Modifieds as part of the 45th Annual DIRTcar Nationals.

Fuller started on the inside of the second row and wasted little time in moving to the front. Fuller grabbed second early before using a restart in the first third of the race to drive around opening lap leader Tyler Dippel. From there, Fuller survived numerous restarts and challenges from long-time friend Billy Dunn to earn his sixth career win at the speedway.

2016 Super DIRTcar Series Expands Its Boundaries

The series rolls into DIRTcar Nationals on Wednesday

By Jo Ann Davies

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 11, 2016 – The Super DIRTcar Series schedule has taken on a new look for the 2016 season and it’s one that has its touring drivers and DIRTcar Northeast’s Mike Perrotte excited about the challenges awaiting them. “This year’s schedule has generated a ton of interest,” stated Perrotte, “and we are ready to deliver a superior dirt racing experience for all of our fans.”

With the top Big-Block Modified point drivers from last season committing themselves to this year’s program, as well as a couple of new followers, the title could belong to anyone at season’s end. For most of the past decade the Mr. DIRTcar title has been a contest among the same three drivers-four-time SDS champion Matt Sheppard, three-time SDS champion Billy Decker, and eight-time SDS champion Brett Hearn.

Before the season even began, the 2015 Series champion, Matt Sheppard, and the second place finisher in points, Billy Decker, were each dealt the blow of being informed by their team owners they needed to look elsewhere for 2016. Speculation was rampant as to what each driver would do for the upcoming season.
