Matt Sheppard had two strikes riding against him when he arrived at Autodrome Drummond on Sunday, yet he still came up swinging and never looked back on his way to scoring a tour-best fifth Super DIRTcar Series victory of the season and close out ‘Dream Weekend Race Mania 5’ in the Canadian province of Quebec.

‘Super Matt’ led the majority of 100-lap main events at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park over Labor Day Weekend before a broken hub in the Weedsport finale and a flat tire at the ‘Fast Track’ thwarted the latest efforts for DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s winningest Big-Block Modified driver.

“Seems like the last few of these (series) races we’ve led and dominated but something has always happened at the end,” remarked Sheppard, 27, who has now led 632 feature laps at nine of 18 series stops, nearly doubling the total of his closest challenger during the ’09 campaign. “You better believe I was counting down every lap coming down the stretch.”

Waiting for any miscue that never did materialize, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar points king Billy Decker closed to within five car-lengths under the checkered flag, followed by Central New York standouts Justin Haers, Gary Tomkins and Jimmy Phelps. Veterans Danny Johnson (6th) and current Mr. DIRTcar points leader Brett Hearn (8th) helped fill out the top-10 that included favorite area Frenchmen David Hebert (7th), Mario Clair (9th), Drummond promoter Yan Bussiere (10th) and Alex Fortier (11th), the last driver to be scored on the lead lap.

In the annual trip across the border that was postponed from Friday due to high winds, rain and unseasonably cold temperatures, a strong international field of 32 Big-Block/Small-Block chauffeurs made up the starting grid on Sunday with $6,000 awaiting the winner of the Great Canadian Tour finale.

Tomkins let his intentions be known early, charging from inside row two to overtake pole-sitter Haers on the opening circuit and maintaining a torrid pace during the initial stages of the century grind. Sixth-place starter Sheppard was a bit more patient, taking 10 laps to put his JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell entry into the show position and just another five circuits to wrestle away second from Haers.

Recently crowned Autodrome Edelweiss 358-Modified points champion Pierre Dagenais slowed high exiting turn three to incur the first caution period on lap 29, closing the gap between Tomkins and Sheppard while Decker, Phelps and Haers waited for their chance further back. The restart came on lap 34 and just three more times around the smooth 4/10-mile oval Sheppard blasted high out of turn four to force the final lead change.

Inaugural All-Star Weekend winner at Cayuga County over the summer, Ryan Phelps pulled to the infield faced with mechanical issues to prompt a second yellow flag on lap 42, with older cousin Jimmy Phelps advancing to third despite a broken left-rear shock. At the midway mark, a quick shuffle up front moved Decker behind Sheppard and Tomkins, with Haers and Phelps jockeying for position further back. Steve Paine, Johnson, Hebert, Dale Planck and Bussiere comprised the top-10.

After laps of shadowing Tomkins, Decker emerged as the new second-place runner on lap 58 steering the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell mount. Paine soonafter followed into fifth just before the third caution came on lap 62 when Eric Gauvreau slowed down the backstretch, providing the leaders with a brief break before 20 more green flag laps enhanced the drama.

Paine moved past Tomkins into fourth on lap 80, yet contact between the weekend rivals down the back chute was the beginning of the end for Paine. The ‘Hurricane’ forced out the fourth and final yellow flag when his Tallmadge Tire no. 7x Swarthout Recycling-Instant Heat Wood Pellets/Bicknell machine slowed with a broken left rear axle just eight laps later.

Despite Decker coming more into focus through his rear-view mirror as the final laps clicked off, Sheppard remained steady as the Waterloo, N.Y. pilot sped on to record his 10th career Super DIRTcar Series triumph, exactly twice as many from when the season started, and improved his DIRTcar NE high count to 18 wins in the Big-Block ranks.

“Tire wear was good out there compared to before, they watered the top and packed it down which pretty much took care of all the tire issues,” noted Sheppard, who won his first career series show at Drummond in 2004 and this year has already added first-ever wins at Lebanon Valley Speedway, Merrittville Speedway and Can-Am Motorsports Park. “We probably ran about 70-80 laps tonight before the track started taking rubber, so it turned out to be a really good race. Nicer when you can win, of course.”

Entering the Drummond showdown on foreign soil, runner-up Decker was also in search of his fifth SDS victory of the season, yet settled for his fourth straight top-two finish keeping the Unadilla, N.Y. driver in peak form for the season-ending specials.

“We were screwed around for a long time today but finally got the race in,” said Decker, 44, who blistered the opposition just last year with a record-tying 10 series victories tallied en route to capturing his second overall Mr. DIRTcar crown. “All in all we’ll take it, pretty happy to come out unscathed.”

“The car was really good, not quite as good as Matt early on, but I think at the end we were pretty close. The tires look good, about the same as Justin and Matt, since the track wasn’t as abrasive tonight. It started to get a little in (turns) three and four, then kinda leveled off and that was it,” added Decker, who vaulted past Jimmy Phelps into third on the Mr. DIRTcar points chart, hoping to close in on frontrunners Hearn and Sheppard with less than a month to go.

Crossing the line third for his best finish of the season on tour, Haers completed the trio of Bicknell cars up front as his Phelps Cement Products no. 3 SMV Motorsports-Jeff Jolly Masonry ride was among the fastest at the end.

“We’ll definitely take (3rd), it was a solid run and good for the team,” said Haers, 29, who like Sheppard, is also enjoying his best season to date with eight feature wins registered at Can-Am. “It took me awhile to get up there to the top, even dropped back to 5th or 6th, then I was able to fight back up through there.”

“We’re trying every place we go, just keep getting better and better and that’s all you can ask for. I have to thank everybody that has worked their butts off to get us a podium finish. The guys at Bicknell and Finger Lakes (engine) and my crew, they’re responsible for where we are now,” Haers added.

The 2009 Super DIRTcar Series returns to action next Saturday, September 26 when Rolling Wheels Raceway Park hosts the 23rd World Series Weekend highlighted by the ‘World Series 100’ for Big-Blocks.

Super DIRT Week Website Active
: On-line activity continues to grow with the official site for Super DIRT Week providing valuable information about DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s crown jewel event staged at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. This year’s 38th edition runs October 7-11, 2009 and features Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship Series events for Big-Block Modified, 358-Modified, Sportsman and Pro Stock divisions. Ticket and schedule information is available by contacting the Weedsport office (315/834-6606) during the day or logging into www.superdirtweekonline.com anytime.

Pot Holes: Despite the recent loss of Vinny Salerno’s Big-Block and Small-Block cars in a Saturday morning heist in Drummondville, a pair of Four Star Transmissions-Keizer Aluminum Wheels-Mike Sparta Trucking/TEO 358-Modified entries are still back in the Stony Point, N.Y. shop. Salerno has already lined up Tim McCreadie to strap in behind the wheel of his No. 4 machines during Super DIRT Week in October, one saved for the Moody Mile in Syracuse and the other for satellite events scheduled throughout the week. Plans for Salerno’s regular driver Michael Storms are still undecided yet on Sunday he picked up a ride in a back-up no. 91 Gypsum Express/Bicknell car, finishing 30th in the Super DIRTcar Series 100-lapper….Previously posting the fastest lap in a 358-Modified Series event at Drummond in 2007, host track promoter Yan Bussiere picked up his first-ever Integra Shocks Fast Time Award in the Big-Block ranks on Sunday….13 of Top-16 Mr. DIRTcar point earners signed in at Drummond, an event that marked the first-ever Modified start with a Big-Block engine under the hood for second-generation Tommy Flannigan in Wallace Stacey’s Bicknell ride. He was joined by his father, Dave Flannigan, who was registered in the same no. 37s Bicknell ride that Tommy steered the night before in 358-Modified competition at Drummond….Already missing school on Friday before the Big-Block show at Drummond was postponed to Sunday, Ryan Phelps borrowed a truck & trailer just in time to make the haul to Quebec. He only lasted 38 laps come feature time and was scored 29th in the final rundown.

UPCOMING EVENT
The last Super DIRTcar Series point event of the month arrives next weekend at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park before teams make their final run toward the coveted overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship in October. Activity culminates on Saturday, September 26 with the $6,000-to-win ‘World Series 100’ during the 23rd World Series of DIRT Track Racing Weekend, that also includes a series stop for 358-Modifieds (Fri.) plus Sportsman and Pro Stock tour events (Sat.)
