Series Points Leader Brett Hearn Rallies At RWR For 3rd Series Win In ’09

It was deja-vous all over again for Matt Sheppard as an almost certain Super DIRTcar Series victory once more slipped from his grasp for the second straight night. On an extended Labor Day Weekend that opened with ‘Super Matt’ capturing a pair of area track point championships, it closed just as quickly with two heartbreaking losses on DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s premier traveling tour for Big-Block Modifieds.

While his JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell entry suffered a broken rear hub on Sunday at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, a shredded right-rear tire forced Sheppard to relinquish the lead he had held for 87 laps on Monday at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. And just as reigning overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Champion Billy Decker took advantage of the setback at Cayuga County, it was current tour points leader Brett Hearn pouncing at the chance to increase his lead at The Wheels on Labor Day with a late-race rally that continued to strengthen his odds.

“This was definitely a race we had no thoughts of winning,” admitted Hearn, who turned 51 at the start of the month to bring even more experience to the table as he contends for an unprecedented seventh Mr. DIRTcar Championship in 2009. “It was certainly not our race. We broke a brake rotor and spit the thing out with about 25 laps to go and I ran until the end of the race without brakes.”

“At one point I thought I was going to be fortunate to be in the top-five, then third-place was looking good even with no brakes. I just tried to get a good rhythm and get it into the corner after that. The car really stuck good in the middle of the track late in the race and that was probably the difference,” remarked Hearn, following his third tour triumph of the season to bolster his all-time best career total to 103 series wins.

With the final running order was up for grabs right until the last checkered flag, Decker rallied for second after a mid-race flat tire while Steve Paine, Bobby Varin and Jeff Brownell Jr. filled out the front-five in the annual holiday special at the ‘Fast Track.’

Drawing outside-pole the previous night at Cayuga County, Sheppard bettered that by one on Monday at the ‘Fast Track’ and once again had the 30-car field covered much of the race. He led the initial 75 laps on Sunday before mechanical failure took him out of contention, then dominated the action for all but the last 13 laps at RWR until fate stepped in and once again thwarted the best efforts of the Waterloo, N.Y. driver.

With Rolling Wheels hosting just its second show of the entire season, a solid field of 40 Modified teams signed in each looking for the $6,000 lion’s share in the headline ‘King of Beers 100’ presented by Budweiser. Sheppard was first in line most of the night, copping his qualifying heat before pacing the pack for 87 circuits around the spacious 5/8-miler.

As soon as the first green flag waved to start the 100-lap Modified main, Sheppard seemed to pull away at will with fellow touring driver Jimmy Phelps in tow from the outset. Pat Ward (lap 9) and Ryan Phelps (lap 15) slowed with tire issues to force out yellow flags in the early stages, yet the ensuing restarts offered little salvation for Sheppard’s closest pursuers.

A quarter of the way through Sheppard was already mired in lapped traffic and when the scoreboard kicked off 40 laps complete he had built up a 6.0-second lead over Phelps, who was chased by Varin, Tim Fuller, Alan Johnson and Decker. Little had changed at the midway point other than Fuller wrestling third away from Varin and Decker finally cracking the top-five past Johnson while Hearn, Gary Tomkins, Paine and Brownell made up the top-10 with 50 laps in the book.

The high speed chase to the checkers finally took its toll on Decker with the potent LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell mount ducking pitside under caution following a flat tire on lap 56. Fuller inherited second soonafter when Phelps had a right-rear tread go down to incur a fourth caution period on lap 64.

Just after Hearn grabbed fifth from Alan Johnson on lap 74, ‘A.J. Slideways’ retired on lap 82 as a fan blade broke off in his Bully’s Truck Stop no. 14j CFF,Inc.-Raymond’s Car Care/Bicknell entry to end any chance of repeating a podium finish enjoyed the night before. The lap 85 restart featured Sheppard out front of Fuller and Varin, with Paine and Hearn staying within reach as the final laps counted down.

But just as fast as Sheppard had been for the duration, his night ended almost as abruptly when he suddenly slowed out of turn two with the air gone from his right rear tread. Fuller failed to avoid the slowing Sheppard machine and tagged it in the rear entering turn three, ultimately sending owner Steve Hastings no. 74 Smith Bros. Concrete Foundations-Hudson Valley Concrete Pumping/TEO ride sideways with the final result a flat tire and frustrating trip to the pits.

With Sheppard and Fuller unexpectedly out of the picture in one brief turnaround, Varin advanced to the point looking for an apparent upset in his debut aboard the no. 10 Commercial Roofing & Sheet Metal-JWJ Container Service/Bicknell car owned by Ken Saya and maintained by crew chief Eric Kingsley. Despite continuing to run with a broken brake caliper on the Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Kruger-WLR-BPG/TEO machine, Hearn had ideas of his own, first pulling off a perfect turn four slide job under Paine at the end of lap 94 then slingshotting high around Varin exiting the final corner of the very next lap.

Holding down the fifth slot for the final restart on lap 90, Decker fell short of his third straight tour triumph as he made a last lap charge that still fell 10 car-lengths shy at the line. The third-place showing by Paine was good enough to earn him a guaranteed starting berth in the coveted Super DIRT Week 200 Championship, with its 38th edition slated for Sunday, October 11.

“Every once and a while the car got away from me because I didn’t stick the right front as you usually use the brakes to do that,” said Hearn, who increased his all-time career win total while opening up a 133-point series lead over Sheppard in the revised Mr. DIRTcar standings that now account for track bonus points. “A couple times I really missed bad but in the end was just able to get up to the top there, take our time and get a little bit of momentum … that’s all it took.”

“My team has been awesome. We’ve had a good series and had some heartbreaks along the way but that happens when you have a 20-race series like this. We had a few things happen but this (win) makes up for some of that bad stuff. We started the series out so consistent, there was really nowhere to go but down. Tonight builds us up back to where we were, but things can turn quick and a lot of things can happen in just a few short races,” cautioned Hearn, after scoring his track-high 16th Super DIRTcar Series victory at Rolling Wheels.

Winding up in a similar position the night before after rallying to cop Cayuga County’s 100-lap Modified main on Sunday, Decker settled for runner-up honors to move within five points of Jimmy Phelps for third on the Mr. DIRTcar points chart and 21 behind runner-up Sheppard.

“Looking back we were probably one of the lucky ones to be among the first to have a flat,” figured Decker, who earned the Integra Shocks Fast Time Award for the fourth time this season, once again matching Hearn’s career mark of 41 quick clockings. “That gave us time to get back up through the field.”

“Still would’ve like to have another caution at the end for a shot at a win, be we’ll take second given the circumstances. We’re just trying to put our best foot forward each and every race. We need to win, but when you can’t, 2nd is the next best thing,” Decker added.

Himself a three-time tour race winner at Rolling Wheels, Paine posted his best series finish of the season steering his familiar yellowbird no. 7x Tallmadge Tire-Swarthout Recycling-Instant Heat Wood Pellets/Bicknell machine.

“We were battling for 3rd & 4th then all of a sudden it was for 1st & 2nd,” noted Paine, who claimed his lone overall Hoosier-VP Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Championship in 2000, earning DIRTcar’s highest 358-Modified distinction the year prior. “Then Brett got in there and I got a little held up before Billy got by, he was really coming. We were pretty good, not as good as the first two —I don’t think any of us were— but we still had a good night.”

“We come back here in just two more weeks so I think we’ve got something to grow off of. Hopefully, we’ll be a little better. We only get to (Rolling Wheels) three times a year so its kinda hard to test and tune.around here.”

The 2009 Super DIRTcar Series returns to action this Friday, September 11 when Lernerville Speedway hosts the ‘Autumn-Motive Fest Mod Madness’ special at the popular Sarver, Pa. oval.
