For the second straight night a late-race caution period lengthened the Super DIRTcar Series main event. And for the second consecutive show it was veteran open-wheel pilots Brett Hearn and Billy Decker dicing it out tooth and nail at the front of the pack for more than half the race.

The Friday night finale at Autodrome Granby added a little twist to the outcome as it was Decker finally able to make the winning move past Hearn, cruising home for his first-ever win at the popular Quebec track to collect the $6,000 top prize in the headline ‘Fromagerie Qualite Summum 100’ for Big-Block Modifieds.

“I hope the fans enjoyed this one because its all we got right here,” remarked Decker, 44, following his second Series win of the season. Ironically, the Unadilla, New York driver picked up his first win in Hearn’s own promotion at Orange County Fair Speedway in June, a mid-week show that was cut short to 59 laps due to rain.

“The track was slippery but even from top to bottom and that’s what makes it raceable. If its just slippery in one groove and heavy in another its not very good racing. When its like this its good racing or when it supersonic its good racing, too,” noted Decker, after the defending overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar champion notched his 51st career SDS victory.

Despite the final yellow flag requiring a green-white-checkered flag finish, Decker sprinted out to a 10 car-length advantage over Hearn with Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard and Frenchman David Hebert heading up the top-five in round number seven of the 2009 Super DIRTcar Series.

To the delight of the packed partisan crowd showing their support on a warm summer night, Hebert bested 41 other DIRTcar Modified entries to claim his first career Integra Shocks Fast Time Award. His one-lap clocking of 21.215 was nearly three seconds slower than the track record established last July by Waterloo, New York’s Steve Paine who circled the half-miler in a time of 18.410 sec. for an average speed over 97 mph.

Yet for the second time in the past four tour events, Hearn drew the pole position to start inside row one on the feature race grid while Hebert selected the worst of 12 numbers to sit outside row six when the initial green flag unfurled.

Hearn wasted little time charging out front but no sooner than his blue Madsen Motorsports no. 20 Wentworth Custom Homes-Kruger-WLR-BPG/TEO moved to the point, the huge 38-car starting field was brought to an abrupt halt in the aftermath of local racer Jean Boissonneault flipping his Bicknell mount down the back straightaway. Also limping away with folds in their sheet metal from the early race skirmish that forced officials to throw a rare red flag were Dominic Dufault, Steve Langlois, Kayle Robidoux and Wallace Stacey, although no injuries were reported.

Back under green, Hearn paced the field with Ryan Phelps, Series rookie Michael Storms, Gary Tomkins and Jimmy Phelps in tow. With a dozen laps complete Tomkins had moved in to challenge from the runner-up slot, while both Phelps cousins, Decker, Sheppard and Hebert locked horns in a heated battle for positions three through seven.

Decker emerged as the man on the move, securing fourth on lap 16, ducking underneath teammate Ryan Phelps for third three laps later, then taking advantage of Tomkins slipping up high in the first turn to salvage second and set his sights on Hearn. Wallace Stacey slowed on lap 26 to allow Decker to pull up along side on the ensuing restart, although the first attempt to wrestle away the point found little success.

Leading Quebecois drivers Francois Bernier slowed (lap 38) in turns three-four and Martin Roy parked (lap 60) his mount up against the wall in the same area to incur another pair of caution periods, with Hearn and Decker chased by Jimmy Phelps, Sheppard and Tomkins at the halfway mark.

Decker remained relentless in his bid to overtake the ‘Corporate Jet,’ rubbing rails low in turn on lap 66, testing the high line before Hearn slammed the door closed on the back straight before pulling right alongside the leader yet still unable to finish the deal. Getting the best bite of the night in the inside groove between turns one and two, Decker made his final effort stick and forged the only lead change when the pair exited the last corner to complete lap 75.

On this night steering Stacey’s back-up yellow Bully’s Truck Stop no. 66 -CFF,Inc.-Unicast Crusher Parts/Bicknell machine, Danny Johnson came to a stop exiting turn two to bring out the final yellow flag on lap 95. The late race slowdown pushed the Modified main beyond the scheduled 100-lap distance, but it never even mattered as Decker fired first on the last restart and was never challenged over the final mile.

“We were racing there and Brett was doing a good job and then Jimmy was coming on that next groove up,” stated Decker, after posting his DIRTcar Racing Northeast circuit-best 10th Big-Block feature win of the season aboard the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride. “I don’t think if it weren’t for a caution he probably would’ve passed both of us. I got lucky and caught the caution at the right time, then moved up and used that groove and was able to get a little head start and get her done.”

While Decker was on course for his first feature win at Granby, defending race winner Hearn was in the hunt for his eighth Series victory since 1990.

“I tried to hit every mark I could, tried to stay as smoothe as I could for as long as I could,” lamented a disappointed Hearn, who had captured his second Series race the previous night at Brockville Ontario Speedway in the province of Ontario. “But in the end the no. 91 was better than we were tonight.”

“As the race went on I tried to be very precise. I don’t think we were all that good tonight, just kept trying to keep the car as smooth as I could,” said Hearn, who remains well ahead of Decker in the Series point standings through seven events, with Jimmy Phelps ranking third ahead of Sheppard and Dale Planck.

On the heels of a disappointing outcome the night before at Brockville, Phelps was content with his second top-three finish in the past three races.

“We’re happy with third, we had a tough night last night and to come back and run up front is really good for the team,” figured Phelps, 34, who is still in search is first tour win of the season steering the Mohawk N.E.-New England Race Fuels-Joe Gibbs Racing Oil/Troyer machine car. “We had a good night.”

“I thought it was going to get interesting for a little while. We got ‘em in lapped traffic and got it up there racing with those guys. On a clear track they were a little better than us, just have to work harder tomorrow. We were all on the same track tonight, it sure made it interesting because different guys went with different tires. I guess the bottom line is we had good track position and caught a few breaks early that got us up in the mix. I think we got better as the middle of the race went on, just not as good as the two guys that finished ahead,” Phelps added.

Super DIRTcar Series teams are ready to contend in the second half of the ‘Great Canadian Tour’ with the third round on tap at Autodrome Drummond in Quebec on Saturday, followed by the final night of Big-Block Modified action at Cornwall Motor Speedway in the province of Ontario on Sunday, July 12.

Border Talk
: Series regulars Alan Johnson and Jeff Brownell Jr. are the only drivers not to make the trip over the border for the 2009 edition of the Great Canadian Tour. Johnson had vaulted to sixth in the point standings following his Fulton win while Brownell had locked up guaranteed race status with a 12th-place position through the initial five races.

Final Prep For All-Star Weekend: Victories at Brockville (Hearn) and Granby (Decker) are among the final tune-ups for the inaugural All-Star Weekend that is ready to make history next week, July 17-19, at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Both drivers are also already locked into the starting grid for the first-ever Exemption Dash that goes off Saturday, July 18.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Super DIRTcar Series teams travel across the province for a second straight show in Quebec, hitting Autodrome Drummond on July 11 before concluding the ‘Great Canadian Tour’ on Sunday at Cornwall in Ontario.
