Super DIRTcar Series returns to Utica-Rome after 11-year hiatus
Big-Block Modified drivers and teams gearing up for historic race
WEEDSPORT, N.Y. – Sunday, June 22, 2014 – For the first time in more than a decade, the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Series will be venturing to the famed half-mile at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., for a mid-week special Wednesday, June 25.
“It will be good to have all the big boys there again,” said regular driver for both the track and the series, Pat Ward, of Genoa, N.Y. “I think the place will be packed for that show.”
Eight-time and defending series champion Brett Hearn took victory at Utica-Rome when the Super DIRTcar Series last visited 11 years ago. However, local standouts like Ward, as well as other competitive series racers like 2014 series race winners Matt Shepaprd, of Waterloo, N.Y., and Justin Haers, of Phelps, N.Y., are ready for the challenge.
“I’m really looking forward to going back there,” Haers said of Utica-Rome Speedway. Haers raced at the speedway in 2013 for non-series races and is looking forward to participating in another DIRTcar Racing event there. “It’ll be fun to go back there, and hopefully have a good car count and a good crowd.”
Sheppard leads in points heading into round 4 of the Super DIRTcar Series at Utica-Rome, with Hearn behind by just 16 points. Billy Decker is third in points and Hears, after winning the series opener at Brockville Ontario Speedway, is fifth. Last year’s Syracuse 200 champion, Billy Dunn, is fifth in points. With the margin between each of the points leaders so narrow, Wednesday’s historic race at Utica-Rome will have a dramatic impact on the point standings.
