POINTS UPDATE: Sheppard takes over lead; Pierson breaks into top 10 with podium finish

Latest points update after Albany-Saratoga Speedway

Take a look at the most recent points update and the latest movers with four races down in the quest for the 2023 Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified championship.

LATEST RACE: Albany-Saratoga Speedway (June 13)

MOVERS:

Matt Sheppard (+1): After winning his 90th career win at Lebanon Valley Speedway on May 29, Matt Sheppard came into Albany-Saratoga Speedway three points behind leader Mat Williamson. With a charge from 28th to sixth, he moved himself into the lead by four points.

Mat Williamson (-1): After a red-hot start to the season, Williamson came into Albany-Saratoga leading the way in the points battle by three points. After missing the redraw, the St. Catharines driver battled back from 16th place to finish eighth. However, with Matt Sheppard finishing ahead of him, he slipped to second in points – four points behind Sheppard.

Adam Pierson (+4): Sophomore Adam Pierson continues to improve his performances and show his potential. After a tight battle for second place throughout the Albany-Saratoga Feature, the East Corinth, VT driver finished the race in third, logging his first podium finish of the season.

Chris Hile (+3): The 2021 Rookie of the Year took a good stroke of fortune and ran with it when he drew the pole for the Albany-Saratoga Feature. After taking the lead on Lap 39 of the 71-lap race, he never looked backed and scored his first career Series win, moving him from eighth to fifth in points.

Peter Britten (+1): Consistency has been the name of the game thus far for the “Batman.”  He moved from fifth to fourth in points after fourth-place finishes at Weedsport and Albany-Saratoga. He’ll look to continue the solid finishes when the Series travels to his home track, Land of Legends Raceway.

Darren Smith (-3): Darren Smith finished outside the top-10 for only the second time at Albany-Saratoga when he crossed the line in 12th. The sophomore standout has showed marked improvement since his rookie campaign, notching two Quick Time Awards, his first career top-five finish at Bridgeport Motorsports Park, and a top 10 at Lebanon Valley Speedway. He’ll look to add to those numbers at the next Series matchup at Land of Legends Raceway.

Mike Mahaney (-2): Freshly signed as a full-time driver, King Ferry, NY resident Mike Mahaney will be a serious contender for wins throughout the season. He recorded a top-10 finish at Weedsport Speedway then followed it up with his first podium finish of the season at Lebanon Valley, finishing second behind Matt Sheppard. However, he slipped two spots in points after a 17th-place finish at Albany-Saratoga.

Max McLaughlin (-2): Max McLaughlin has struggled to break into the top 10 after finishing in sixth place during the first race of the championship season at Bridgeport Motorsports Park. After finishing 17th at Lebanon Valley Speedway and 26th at Albany Saratoga, he’ll look to rebound during the next stretch of Series races.
