ABOUT THE TRACK
Following the purchase in New York State of DIRT Motorsports and DIRTcar Northeast charter members Cayuga County Fair Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in the summer of 2004, along with Lernerville (PA) Speedway in March of ’05, the now internationally recognized World Racing Group regime made Volusia Speedway Park its fourth track acquisition in June of ‘05. Boasting nine-degree banking and a 75-feet wide racing surface, the track was built in 1968 and the 2009 season-opener marks the 38th edition of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals exhibition. From early March through late September —November is the only month no races are scheduled— Volusia will run regular Saturday night UMP sanctioned point programs consisting of Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, V8 Thunder Stocks and 4-Cylinders, with a number of specials mixed in between. Go-Karts are slated to run again on the 1/8-mile clay oval located off turn four of the half-miler. Tonya Moschell is the track General Manager, Kari Najar serves as the Office Manager and Ben Phipps holds the position as Director of Marketing. Along with a number of WRG corporate personnel also in attendance, DIRTcar Northeast officials assisting during the week include Cory Reed (Series Race Director), Bob Dini (Chief Technical Inspector), George Johnson (Technician), Gary Spaid (Chief Handicapper-Computer Scoring Operations), and John (flagman) & Ellie Schrader (Pit Stewardess).

PREVIOUS WINNERS
Since hosting the inaugural “Winter Nationals” Modified event in 1978, the storied Barberville speedplant has now staged 87 of the 104 Florida Tour feature races run in February with 32 drivers finding victory lane. Last winter DIRTcar Racing successfully kicked off its 33rd consecutive season of operation at VSP and it featured four different winners in four Big-Block main events. A year ago sharing the crown with New Jersey rival Billy Pauch, Brett Hearn has claimed four of the past eight Alltel DIRTcar Nationals openers and the Garden State chauffeur tops the overall win list with all but three of his 18 triumphs registered at Volusia. And since reviving DIRTcar’s trip south in 1998, Hearn is the lone driver to qualify for all 44 main events, placing among the front-five an unmatched total of 36 times while taking at least one checkered flag 10 of the past 11 years — missing out only in his 2007 attempt!

DIRTcar Racing continued it’s successful steak of racing down south with the 2008 Florida Tour marking the 11th consecutive trip to the ‘Sunshine State’ for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series top Big-Block Modified teams. Last February was also the 24th visit to Gator country since former VSP promoter Benny Corbin first enticed the northern Modifieds to visit the popular half-mile clay oval in 1978. All but four of those years’ events have been sanctioned by DIRTcar.

2008 ALLTEL DIRTcar NATIONALS REVIEW
New Jersey state rivals Brett Hearn and Billy Pauch finished bumper-to-bumper four straight nights to produce the fourth tie in the history of the coveted Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block Modified Championship. Pauch captured the 30-lap lid-lifter followed by Hearn and the “Jet” flew to the front in round two with Billy “The Kid” settling for runner-up laurels. Advance Series star Dale Planck notched his first career win down south and Jimmy Horton copped the 50-lap finale as Hearn and Pauch each racked up two more top-five finishes to forge the tie. The Alltel DIRTcar Nationals points championship was the seventh for Hearn and third for Pauch, ironically, with each also tying for the title one other time; Hearn with Andy Bachetti in 2005 and Pauch with Jeff Kappesser in 1982.

Feb. 13: The last time Billy Pauch buckled in behind the wheel of a DIRTcar Big-Block Modified in Florida was 1989. His last Modified victory in the Sunshine State was registered one year before that and until this night the Frenchtown, New Jersey standout could only recount his more recent victories down south in a sprint car ride. Steering the no. 1W Will Brown Truck Repair-K&A Excavating/Bicknell machine on Wednesday at Volusia Speedway Park, it was just like old times as Pauch led all but the initial circuit to open the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals in victory lane for the first time in 20 years. His dominating performance to kick off the 10th season for Advance Auto Parts was rewarded with the $2,000 top prize. Reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified points king Mario Clair ventured south from Quebec with a Big-Block powerplant packed under the hood and after copping the second of four qualifying heats out-dragged front row partner Steve Downs to take command early. Pauch wasted no time blasting from third to first on the second lap and never flinched the rest of the way despite seven yellow flags delaying the inevitable in the 30-lap main event. All-time Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block race winner Brett Hearn from Sussex, New Jersey charged from ninth to second a third of the way through yet was unable to threaten his Garden State rival and eventually fell a straightaway behind when the checkered flag flew. The New York State trio of Pat Ward, Alan Johnson and Matt Sheppard forged front-five finishes at the stripe while Florida Tour mainstay Rick Laubach, consi winner Jimmy Phelps, 15 year-old pilot Larry Wight, Canadian Clair and
Pennsylvania traveler Kevin Hirthler completed the top-10.

Feb. 14: Brett Hearn loves the holiday, especially when he can out-duel his biggest intrastate rival in a bumper-to-bumper finish in front of a national crowd. In a near caution-free feature event for the Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modifieds, Hearn scored his fourth victory on Valentine’s Day after a dramatic race-long battle with fellow New Jersey wheelman Billy Pauch in round two of the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park. His thrilling Thursday night triumph rewarded the six-time Florida tour points champion with an all-time high 18th checkered flag and the $2,000 first-place prize. Following Hearn and Pauch across the stripe were 2007 points runner-up Dale Planck, opening night DNQ Jimmy Horton and all-time DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Big-Block feature winner Alan Johnson while Matt Sheppard, Pat Ward, Canadian standout and ’07 Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Mario Clair, Pennsylvania pilot Rick Laubach and Delaware driver Jamie Mills filled out the top-10. The 30-lap Modified main began with the top-four finishers from Wednesday night occupying the front two rows with Hearn, Pauch, Ward and Johnson taking advantage of the heads-up format following their respective qualifying heat race wins. Hearn bolted low as soon as the initial green flag flew over the 26-car starting field and the race was on for Garden State supremacy in the Sunshine State. Pauch ducked behind Hearn from the beginning and when Massachusetts invader Andy Bachetti slowed to force out the lone caution on lap nine, the New Jersey duo was reacquainted with its nearest chasers including seventh starting Planck, Ward and Johnson. On the ensuing restart, Pauch suddenly veered underneath exiting turn four and contact with the leader created a buzz from the crowd in anticipation of the show that proceeded to unfold. Three laps later the “Kid” snookered the “Jet” and sped past Hearn on the top side opening up a half-dozen car-length lead immediately after. But unlike the previous night when Hearn reluctantly settled for second, this time around the Sussex, N.J. speedster was in prime position to regain the point when Pauch drifted high in turn two on lap 17. The lead duo then reached traffic the following circuit and the stage was set for one of the closest Florida finishes during the new millennium. Yet despite the lapped traffic forcing the leaders to weave their way through both high and low in every corner, Pauch could not reel in Hearn and match his opening night victory, leaving the legendary New Jersey pair tied atop the point standings with the final two events still to go.

Feb. 15: Dale Planck has been taking the trek down I-95 since the new millennium arrived. It took the Cortland, New York driver 15 tries and on Friday he finally made his way into the winner’s circle at Volusia Speedway Park, scoring a decisive victory in round three of the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals for his sixth career DIRTcar Big-Block Modified triumph. Salvaging his third straight front-five finish was runner-up Alan Johnson followed by fellow Central New York veteran Pat Ward and opening two nights winners Billy Pauch and Brett Hearn. Frenchman Mario Clair charged into sixth with Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series stars Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps, Jeff Isabell and Vince Vitale rounding out the final top-10. Johnson out-dragged pole-sitter Jamie Mills to open the 30-lap main event and after filing into eighth on the 26-car starting grid, Planck methodically plodded his way to the front before ducking under ‘A.J. Slideways’ in his new RezX Racing no. 77x Grow It Hydroseeding-Action Race Parts/TEO mount to forge the final lead change on lap 10. Prior to the long-awaited win, Planck had steered three different chassis the past three winters at Volusia improving from 21st in 2005 to runner-up status last February in the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals points chase, while settling for 4th-place laurels in 2006. Planck began following the Advance Auto Parts Series full-time in 2006 and has since posted a pair of 100-lap victories. He placed 11th in overall 2006 Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship points and moved up into the sixth slot in ’07 before climbing to third last season.

Feb. 16: The curtain came down on the 37th Annual DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia for the Advance Auto Parts Series Big-Block Modifieds on Saturday with Jimmy Horton winning the 50-lap finale to earn the $5,000 top prize. Horton almost wasn’t able to save his best for last, yet having one of the fastest cars for the second straight night gave him a chance and the Neshanic Station, New Jersey speedster took advantage to survive and score a dramatic win Saturday in the Advance Auto Parts Alltel 50 finale at Volusia Speedway Park. Early race leader Jimmy Phelps hung on to finish second four car-lengths behind for his first top-five tally of the week in the H&H Motorsports no. 98H Mohawk Northeast-New England Race Fuels/Troyer mount. Suffering a flat left-rear tire immediately after grabbing the lead from Phelps on lap 18, Friday night winner Dale Planck charged back through the pack to place third ahead of co-champions Brett Hearn and Billy Pauch, each finishing nose-to-tail for the fourth straight night to produce the fourth tie in history for the coveted Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block Modified points title. Danny Johnson jumped out first from his pole-position start and stayed there until Phelps drove around as the pair throttled out of turn two on the third circuit. Pauch, Planck and Horton chased the leaders in the early going with Planck finally moving past Pauch for third on lap 13 and overtaking Johnson for the runner-up slot two laps later. Planck ducked low to forge his first lead on lap 18 but that lasted only one more circuit as his left-rear Hoosier went soft allowing Phelps to regain the point. Pauch suddenly came to life on a lap 20 restart, blasting from fourth to first while Horton was left to watch in fifth. Horton quickly cracked the top-three and flew past Phelps on a lap 26 restart then the “Sensational One” sped high around Pauch to forge the final lead change on lap 28. Planck improved to ninth by lap 40 and closed in on the top-five with a handful of laps to go. He ducked under Hearn in turn four and that’s how it ended as Horton held on for his 83rd career DIRTcar Big-Block Modified feature win with Phelps in tow.

DECKER DOMINATES FOR 2nd MR. DIRTcar CHAMPIONSHIP
Billy Decker was crowned the overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Champion in 2008, with his initial title taken exactly 10 years earlier in 1998. Chalking up a record-tying Advance Auto Parts Series 10 feature wins in ‘08, the ‘Franklin Flyer’ grabbed the points lead early in June and never wavered the rest of the way as he secured DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s highest Big-Block Modified honor for owners John and Laura Wight. H&H Motorsports pilot Jimmy Phelps overtook Dale Planck for second in the season-finale at Orange County Fair (NY) Speedway, with ’04 overall champion Gary Tomkins also moving past all-time Advance Series champion Brett Hearn at OCFS to fill out the front-five. 2008 Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year Larry Wight finished 14th on the final points chart.

NEWS & NOTES
Alltel All-Star Challenge II Off And Running
: The 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park will be filled with the world’s greatest dirt track racers. Fans can once again choose the best of the best as Alltel Wireless and the World Racing Group combine to present the Alltel DIRTcar All-Star contest for a second straight February. Added incentive for any driver able to crack the hallowed victory lane during one of the 12 consecutive nights of racing at the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals, Feb. 3-14, is a $10,000 cash bonus, while one lucky fan will be eligible to win a $500 Alltel Wireless gift card just for voting! New this year is that the leading vote-getter in each division (aside from the overall winner) will collect $1,000. Alltel Wireless will reward fans’ favorite driver as determined in a text message and online poll. Only drivers who win an A-main during the 12-day event are eligible to win the cash prize.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on February 4 and through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on March 15, fans may cast their votes up to once a day by texting #247253 plus their favorite driver’s letter code (available at top of each image provided on alltelallstar.com homepage) or by visiting www.alltelallstar.com. The winning drivers will be named in a special ceremony thereafter. After winning a UMP DIRTcar Modified feature last year at VSP, Dave Hess Jr. automatically became eligible for the inaugural Alltel All-Star online competition and when all the votes were tallied the following month he pocketed the top prize.

Top-3 Feature Finishers To Sign Autographs: Highlighting the second week of oval track entertainment at the popular Barberville facility will be nightly autograph sessions spotlighting the top-3 Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modified feature race finishers. Immediately following victory lane ceremonies every night, February 11-14, the top-3 drivers will cross the track and take up their position behind the main grandstands to sign autographs. Throughout the entire DIRTcar Nationals there will also be a number of drivers participating in special promotions held in the Turn 1 Alltel ‘Fan Zone’ with Alltel associates handing out premium items and valuable coupons as well as distributing important fan information.

Prominent Big-Block Teams Set For Trip To Sunshine State: With entries representing nine states and Canada, an admirable Advance Auto Parts Big-Block Modified preliminary pre-race roster for the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park boasts over 35 drivers geared up to take the trip south in February. High atop that chart are a handful of drivers accounting for nearly a dozen Florida Tour point titles spread over the past quarter-century, with almost two-dozen of those same chauffeurs accounting for over 1,700 feature wins on the demanding DIRTcar Racing Northeast circuit. Eight on this legendary list have reached Volusia’s hallowed victory lane, including three from last year’s wintertime visit to the storied Barberville oval.

VP Named Official Race Fuel Of DIRTcar Northeast: The World Racing Group recently announced that VP Racing Fuels has signed a multi-year agreement to be the Official Racing Fuel of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, all 12 divisions of DIRTcar Racing and UMP DIRTcar Racing, along with a number of regional touring series that fall under the DIRTcar banner. In the DIRTcar Racing Northeast Region, the only fuels allowed in the Big-Block Modified and 358-Modified divisions at sanctioned events will be VP110 and C12. The multi-faceted deal begins with the season-opening Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park, where VP will be the sole fuel supplier at the high speed, half-miler. VP Racing Fuels will roll out a program to quickly become a part of the fabric of DIRTcar Racing with aggressive promotional programs for DIRTcar sanctioned tracks, while giving the competitors a variety of incentive programs across all World Racing Group series, divisions and sanctioning bodies.

Great Race Action Comes Into Clear View At Volusia: Racers in action during the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals By UNOH will use just about every inch of the Volusia Speedway Park monster half-mile oval. And now fans will be able to see every breathtaking move all 12 nights of racing the first two weeks in February. This year, race haulers in the infield will be limited in height to 9 feet, 6 inches enabling the clearest sightlines for every seat in the house. Fans sitting toward Turn 4 can see a pass for the lead in the second corner and those sitting in Turn 1 will see potential slide jobs for a win in Turn 4.
