ABOUT THE TRACK
Following the purchase in New York State of DIRT Motorsports and DIRTcar NorthEast charter members Cayuga County Fair Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in the summer of 2004, along with Lernerville (PA) Speedway in March of ’05, the now internationally recognized World Racing Group regime made Volusia Speedway Park its fourth track acquisition in June of ‘05. Boasting nine-degree banking and a 75-feet wide racing surface, the track was built in 1968 and the 2008 season-opener marks the 37th edition of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals exhibition. From early spring through late autumn Volusia will run regular Saturday night UMP sanctioned programs consisting of Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and 4-Cylinders, with a number of specials mixed in between. Go-Karts are slated to run again on the 1/8-mile clay oval located off turn four of the half-miler. Larry Fink is the track General Manager, Kari Najar serves as the Office Manager and Tonya Moschell is the new Director of Marketing. Along with a number of WRG corporate personnel also in attendance, DIRTcar NorthEast officials assisting during the week include Cory Reed (Race Director), Gary Spaid (Chief Handicapper-Computer Scoring Operations), and John (flagman) & Ellie Schrader (Pit Stewardess).

PREVIOUS WINNERS
Since hosting the inaugural “Winter Nationals” Modified event in 1978, the storied Barberville speedplant has now staged 83 of the 100 Florida Tour feature races run in February with 31 drivers finding victory lane. Last winter DIRTcar Racing successfully kicked off its 32nd consecutive season of operation and it marked the second straight year that there was a repeat winner at Volusia with Danny Johnson doubling up en route to the 2007 crown. Brett Hearn has claimed four of the past seven Alltel DIRTcar Nationals openers and the Garden State chauffeur tops the overall win list with all but three of his 17 triumphs registered at Volusia. And since reviving DIRTcar’s trip south in 1998, Hearn is the lone driver to qualify for all 40 main events, placing among the front-five an impressive total of 32 times while taking at least one checkered flag nine of the past 10 years — only missing out in his attempt last winter!

DIRTcar Racing continued it’s successful steak of racing down south with the 2007 Florida Tour marking the 10th consecutive trip to the ‘Sunshine State’ for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series top Big-Block Modified teams. Last February also marked the 23rd visit to Gator country since former VSP promoter Benny Corbin first enticed the northern Modifieds to visit the popular half-mile clay oval in 1978. All but four of those years’ events have been sanctioned by DIRTcar with the ’07 Advance Auto Parts Series non-point shows for Big-Block Modifieds attracting 42 drivers representing seven states plus the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

2007 ALLTEL DIRTcar NATIONALS REVIEW
Rochester, New Yorker Danny Johnson dominated the Big-Block Modified action last winter as owner Dave Thompson’s first-string pilot, posting a pair of feature wins and adding a runner-up finish to capture his third Alltel DIRTcar Nationals title in gator country. Tim Fuller won the second 30-lapper at Volusia while Johnson matched his opening night success with a stellar performance to claim the 50-lap finale and close out the annual Advance Auto Parts mini-series.

Feb. 14: Central New York standout Danny Johnson celebrated the 10th straight year of competition at Volusia Speedway Park as he captured opening round honors in the 30-lap Advance Auto Parts mini-series main to kick off the 36th Annual DIRTcar Nationals for Big-Block Modifieds on Wednesday night. Four qualifying heats reduced the 39-car field to 26 starters for the 15-mile Big-Block finale. Johnson won the fourth and final qualifier to start fourth with the heads-up format in place. The Rochester, N.Y. veteran sent out a clear message right from the start as he used every inch of the slick half-miler to slingshot past pole-sitter Brett Hearn and lead the initial circuit to the crowd’s delight. Following a pair of early caution flags, Johnson opened up a commanding advantage although the order in his rear-view mirror changed nearly every lap. Despite Hearn clinging to the runner-up position until the halfway mark, 17th-place starter Billy Decker was the man on the move cracking the front-five by lap five and breaking into the top-three for the first time with less than 10 laps complete. After Pennsylvanian Dave Schrader looped his mount at the end of the back straightaway, Decker found all the bite he needed on the ensuing lap 22 restart and bolted past high as the lead duo jockeyed through turns one and two. The 10th and final yellow flag unfurled when reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified points king Alan Johnson came to halt in turn four to freeze the lap counter at 26 and offer front-runners Decker, D.J. and Dale Planck a chance to take a breath before the final sprint to the checkered flag. Decker out-dragged Johnson on the restart but lap 27 was the magic number for the orange no. 27J Thompson Motorsports-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas/Troyer machine as the “Doctor” stormed underneath when Decker overshot the berm between turns three and four. Low running Planck mirrored the winning move with two laps still to go and actually inched past Johnson in the closing stages on the back chute before falling eight car-lengths behind at the stripe. Decker settled for the show position followed by Matt Sheppard and Andy Bachetti while Jamie Mills, Canadian Pat O’Brien, Hearn, Pat Ward and Jimmy Horton completed the top-10.

Feb. 15: For the second time in three days, Advance Auto Parts action for the Big-Block Modifieds fell victim to rain at Volusia. Persistent showers throughout the evening Thursday forced track officials to reluctantly put an end to the 10th day of short track competition scheduled during the DIRTcar Nationals. Heavy afternoon rain accompanied by streaks of thunder and lightning had prompted the same decision on Tuesday. Qualifying runs for the WoO Late Model Series season-opener on Thursday were completed with intermittent sprinkles covering the spacious half-miler, yet with four laps scored in the first of four Big-Block Modified heat races the cars were pulled back into the pits as the rain increased in intensity. Pole-sitter Andy Bachetti had assumed his starting position to begin the first Modified heat at 8:45 as a light drizzle continued to fall although the track surface remained smooth and tacky as overcast skies earlier in the day had locked in every bit of moisture. Bachetti retained the point ahead of Jamie Mills, Tim Fuller, David VanHorn and Randy Chrysler when the call was made to clear the track just 10 minutes later. The official announcement to cancel the remainder of the program was made at 9:40pm. The last time traveling teams suffered a rain-out of a race was in the 2004 Florida Tour finale.

Feb. 16: An abundance of track time in February paid big dividends for Edwards, N.Y. driver Tim Fuller on Friday night at Volusia as he captured his first Advance Auto Parts non-point series win of the year in the 30-lap DIRT Big-Block Modified main. Fuller staved off a late race rally by Dale Planck then outlasted opening night winner Danny Johnson en route to claiming the $2,000 top prize during the 36th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals. New Jersey veterans Billy Pauch and Jimmy Horton shared front row starting assignments after winning the first two of four heat race qualifiers and it was pole-sitter Pauch darting out first. Yet after just one more circuit around the slippery half-mile Barberville oval, heat three victor Fuller blasted by on the high side in his no. 19 Native Poker-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO entry exiting turn four and never missed a beat in just his second Big-Block effort of the 2007 campaign. Victory for Fuller seemed well in hand with the opening five laps complete and Pauch riding nearly a half straightaway behind in Will Brown’s no. 1W TEO mount. Yet that same advantage evaporated just as quickly as it was built up when J.R. Heffner and Ray Swinehart tangled entering turn one to initiate the first caution period. Danny Johnson started sixth in the 26-car field and charged around Pauch on the ensuing lap seven restart but his potent Thompson Motorsports/Troyer machine was no match on this night for the high-flying Fuller. Opening night runner-up Planck had his own agenda, looking to improve just one position in round two for the mighty Modifieds. He began seventh and cracked the top-three with 10 laps complete before overtaking Johnson for second with half the race scored. Lap by lap the Cortland, N.Y. standout tracked down the leader in traffic and with five laps to go took his best shot. Fuller took the brunt from this all-out bid as Planck went high and contact with the leader’s right rear tire sent him airborne to end any chance of collecting his first-ever trophy down south. Colin Jackson looped by himself in the fourth turn on the final circuit to set up a one-lap dash for the checkers between Fuller and Johnson. Looking to repeat on consecutive nights at Volusia, Johnson crossed the finish line three car-lengths behind while Pauch settled for third-place in the 16-minute main. Planck regrouped to finish fourth while Jamie Mills slipped past Pat O’Brien on the last lap to fill out the front-five.

Feb. 17: The curtain came down on the 36th Annual DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia for the Advance Auto Parts Series Big-Block Modifieds on Saturday with Danny Johnson winning the 50-lap finale to clinch the rain-shortened three-race Florida Tour points title. It was the second Florida Tour triumph in four days that rewarded him with the $5,000 top prize. The second-generation standout showcased his dominance during the week by scoring his 11th career victory while clinching a third DIRTcar Nationals points championship in the annual winter road trip for DIRTcar NorthEast’s top traveling teams. With bragging rights on the line coming into Saturday’s showdown, the title was clearly in sight for heat winners Danny Johnson and Dale Planck. Pole-sitter Planck and third-place starter Johnson topped the points chart entering the 25-mile main as they were the only two drivers to post a pair of top-five finishes. Older brother Alan Johnson out-dragged front row partner Planck to lead the initial circuit yet Planck held his line low to move back in front the next lap around the wide half-mile clay oval. Despite starting third on the 28-car grid, Danny Johnson dropped off the pace momentarily before wrestling away the runner-up position from defending Florida Tour points champion Brett Hearn as Alan faded among the front-five. Danny chased down Planck and made the winning pass on lap nine and proceeded to put the Thompson ride on cruise control for the duration. At the halfway mark Johnson held a comfortable lead over Hearn, previous night’s winner Tim Fuller, Planck and Jimmy Horton. Fuller grabbed the second spot from Hearn with 29 circuits complete and set his sights on the ‘Doctor’ as positions changed lap after lap in their rear view mirror. Fuller tried in vain to track down D.J. over the closing circuits but hopped the turn three berm with just five to go to bring his night to a sudden end. Johnson coasted home for a commanding 10 car-length victory at the stripe followed by Horton, a fast-charging Alan Johnson, rising star David VanHorn and Hearn.

NEWS & NOTES
Alltel DIRTcar All-Star Challenge Announced: The 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park is filled with the world’s greatest dirt track racers. Now, fans can choose the best of the best as Alltel Wireless and the World Racing Group recently the launched the Alltel DIRTcar All-Star contest. As if the drivers needed any more incentive to reach victory lane during one of the 12 consecutive nights of racing at the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Feb. 5-16, now they can win a $12,000 cash prize. Alltel Wireless will reward fans’ favorite driver as determined in a text message and online poll. Only drivers who win an A-main during the 12-day event are eligible to win the cash prize.

“We did not want to just put our name on the DIRTcar Nationals, we wanted to get involved with the drivers, teams and especially the fans,” said Samira Zebian, director of sponsorship marketing for Alltel Wireless. “The Alltel Wireless DIRTcar All-Star contest puts fans in control of the outcome. If the drivers want to take home the $12,000 purse, they will need a strong performance on the track and an even better campaign strategy to earn the people’s choice award!”

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on Feb. 6 and through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on March 16, fans may cast their votes up to once a day by texting #52191 plus their favorite driver’s letter code (available at alltelallstar.com) or by visiting alltelallstar.com. The winning driver will be named in a special ceremony shortly thereafter.

Autographs Abound From Advance Series Big-Block Drivers: The all-new Alltel ‘Fan Zone’ at Volusia Speedway Park will be rockin’ and rollin’ throughout the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals, with plenty of fanfare complementing 12 straight nights of trackside activity. Highlighting the second week of oval track entertainment at the popular Barberville facility will be a pair of autograph sessions including a number of Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified drivers slated for Wednesday, Feb. 13 and Friday, Feb. 15. The Troyer trio of defending Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block points champion Danny Johnson, Jimmy Phelps and Jimmy Horton, along with Bicknell chassis chauffeurs Matt Sheppard and Jamie Mills will be available prior to their Wednesday opener while TEO Pro Car titans Brett Hearn, Alan Johnson, Dale Planck and David VanHorn will be seated alongside PMC pilot Andy Bachetti for the Friday festivities.
