Weedsport, NY — March 26, 2009 – By Tom Skibinski, Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series PR Director
The 2009 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series opener, 7th Annual North-South Shootout at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway on Saturday, March 28 is just two days away.
Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Series partnership with Advance Auto Parts based in Roanoke, Virginia, those top-10 drivers in the final 2008 Advance Auto Parts Series Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified will be profiled for each of the 10 days leading up to the event.
This talented group of drivers has accounted for 207 Advance Series race victories from the list of 67 drivers taking checkered flags in 619 tour events held at 45 speedways around the Northeast since 1980. Along with 870 DIRTcar Northeast Big-Block feature wins and 63 track point titles, these same 10 drivers have amassed nine overall Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Championships and all are expected back to compete full-time with the ’09 Advance Auto Parts Series, beginning with the Spring lid-lifter at Hagerstown.
Jimmy Phelps continued his consistent climb up the points chart for a fourth straight year in the H&H Motorsports no. 98H Mohawk N.E.-New England Race Fuels-Joe Gibbs Racing Oil/Troyer machine, in ’08 staging a career-high runner-up performance with the help of 23 Top-10 tallies. The Baldwinsville, New York chauffeur had one fast time set at Can-Am Motorsports Park and scored his lone Advance Series win at Merrittville Speedway in convincing fashion, leading all but 3 laps in the Wilkens Memorial 100.
Phelps has displayed gradual improvement every year, moving from ninth in the 2005 overall Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block standings to second last season with four tour triumphs tallied along the way. The ‘B’Ville Blizzard’ has proven to be as competitive across the border as out-of-state, winning at Williams Grove (Pa.) Speedway in ’06 and last summer at Merrittville in Thorold, Ontario to complement a pair of Advance Series wins in the Empire State at Brewerton Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.
The Central New York lifer failed to qualify in the inaugural ‘North-South Shootout’ at Hagerstown Speedway held in 2001, yet has run the last three shows at the Plessinger speedplant scoring a 12th-place best in 2007.
