ABOUT THE TRACKS
Lebanon Valley is listed as a 1/2-mile high-banked oval with the smooth surface one of the fastest on the entire DIRTcar Northeast circuit. Andy Bachetti set the Big-Block Modified tour record (16.645 sec./91.626 mph) on Sept. 11, 2004. J.R. Heffner and Mark Flach Jr. were crowned track co-champions last season and Saturday winner Bachetti tops the current point standings with Kenny Tremont ranking as the all-time track leader with 112 DIRTcar Big-Block triumphs scored since 1982. Featuring DIRTcar 358-Modified, ACT Sportsman, Renegade, Mini Mod and Bomber classes every Saturday throughout the summer, Airborne is a half-mile paved oval. Patrick Dupree was crowned the first DIRTcar 358 champion on asphalt at the Plattsburgh, New York track last season, while Martin Roy tops the ‘09 points chart with two wins through May.

PREVIOUS WINNERS
Lebanon Valley Speedway has hosted 47 events in the Advance Auto Parts Series, and ranks behind only Rolling Wheels Raceway Park (80) and the Syracuse Mile (48) in total tour races run since 1980. Experience on the high banks has paid big dividends as all but three of the 14 past tour winners have returned to victory lane. Brett Hearn, who scored the first of his record 100 Advance Series wins at The Valley in 1981, tops the chart with all-time track winner Kenny Tremont and defending Mr. DIRTcar Champion Billy Decker next.

Although Airborne has now hosted a pair of DIRTcar Big-Block events the past two seasons on asphalt, the upcoming June date is the first in tour competition. Track regulars Martin Roy (2008) and Mike Bruno (2007) took checkered flags with their Small-Block powered entries while the list of past Big-Block winners on dirt includes Bob Savoie (9/1/84), Alan Johnson (7/13/88), C.D. Coville (7/27/88) and Robert Ranger (6/21/89).

TRACK HISTORY
Celebrating its ‘Golden Anniversary’ of automobile racing in 2003, Lebanon Valley Speedway has complemented the growth and development of the DIRTcar Racing organization under the promotion of current owner Howard Commander. The half-mile track that was originally laid out in 1953 was owned and operated by the Massachusetts trio of Edward Radke, Robert Scott and Harold Beitzel. The grand opening-day show was cancelled due to a Sunday rainstorm and the following week’s scheduled 50-lapper was reduced to 26 circuits when competing drivers declared the track turns too dangerous. Hully Bunn from Cropseyville. N.Y. won the inaugural 13 mile main event on June 28, 1953 in front of an estimated crowd of 2,500. Lou Spanier gained ownership in 1954 and at the end of the ’55 season Lebanon Valley gained its signature high banking —a timely project as no record of racing in 1956 can be found— that has become a track trademark ever since. Racing resumed in 1957 under the promotion of Spanier and the Lebanon Valley Auto Racing Association. Race day moved from Sunday afternoons to Friday evenings and midway through that same season the switch was made to Saturday nights where it has remained for 50 years. Before the 1950s came to a close, future DIRT MotorSports Hall of Famer Howie Westerveldt established a single-season record that stands intact today. In 1959 the Ravena, N.Y. racing pioneer won 17 features, was runner-up three times and placed third once in 21 events! The reigns of promoter were eventually passed from ‘Uncle Lou’ Spanier to Commander in 1970 and he remains at the helm as the new millennium presses on. Lebanon Valley joined the DIRTcar fold in 1980 and has boasted some of the top drivers on the entire circuit including past Syracuse Rite Aid 200 champions Kenny Tremont, Billy Decker and five-time Valley points king Brett Hearn. All three open-wheel veterans rank among the top-10 on DIRTcar Northeast’s all-time Big-Block Modified winner’s list since the organization was formed in 1976.

Current owners Steve and Denise Fuller completed the purchase of Airborne Speedway in 2007 from a Vermont corporation headed by American Canadian Tour (ACT) President Tom Curley. The two seasons prior, George and Julie Huttig and current promoter Mike Perrotte —’86 track champion and co-owner in 1988— of Elizabethtown, New York had leased and managed the asphalt half-mile facility that first opened as a dirt track in 1954 under the ownership of Maurice Broderick. 1955 marked the first full-season of racing in Plattsburgh with legendary pilot Billy Wimble crowned the inaugural track points champion. C.J. Richards took over promotions in the early 1980’s, returning the track to dirt and shortening it from a half to the current 4/10-miler, before Curley and Ken Squier bought it and paved it as a ½-mile in 1990. Buck Holliday (1956-57), Dick Nephew (1969-70) and C.D. Coville (1987-88) are among the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame inductees capturing Airborne titles, on a list that also includes Jean Paul Cabana, Guy Chartrand, Bobby and Beaver Dragon, plus modern-day DIRTcar runners Leon Gonyo (2005), Mike Bruno (‘06) and George Foley (’07).

NEWS & NOTES
2009 Mr. DIRTcar Championship On The Line
: The overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion in 2009 will be determined by adding actual points earned in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series along with bonus points collected at a designated hometrack throughout the racing season. Along with gaining valuable Advance Series points during the year, each driver can now earn a maximum of 360 additional points (60 per event) from participation in six feature races at their hometrack when Mr. DIRTcar Championship points are officially tallied after Labor.

Billy Decker was crowned Mr. DIRTcar Champion in 2008, with his initial title taken exactly 10 years earlier in 1998. Chalking up a record-tying Advance Auto Parts Series 10 feature wins in ‘08, the ‘Franklin Flyer’ grabbed the points lead early in June and never wavered the rest of the way as he secured DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s highest Big-Block Modified honor for owners John & Laura Wight and the Gypsum Wholesalers Team. Jimmy Phelps overtook Dale Planck for second in the season-finale, with ’04 champion Gary Tomkins also moving past all-time Advance Series champion Brett Hearn in the last race to fill out the front-five. 2008 Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year Larry Wight finished 14th on the final points chart.

Pavement Past: As part of the Advance Auto Parts Series from 1989-92, the short-lived DIRT-Asphalt Challenge is chronicled in the DIRTcar Northeast record book with 20 feature events staged at six tracks. Although its been 17 years since a tour race has been held on asphalt, active runners Brett Hearn, Danny Johnson and Frank Cozze were on the elite list of 11 feature winners during that earlier era, while current point chasers like Alan Johnson and defending overall Mr. DIRTcar Champion Billy Decker still know how to get around on a smooth, black oval. Hearn was crowned D/A champion in 1989-90, followed in order by Pennsylvanians Doug Hoffman (1991) and Kevin Collins (1992).

Home Sweet Home: Although a handful of Advance Series drivers have numerous years of experience at Lebanon Valley, none call the high banks home today on weekends. The only asphalt oval to showcase the DIRTcar 358-Modifieds on a weekly basis, Airborne also runs every Saturday and will present an even bigger test for touring teams as they compete in the Sunday special on a smooth yet unfamiliar surface. Valley top-5 point-getters Andy Bachetti, Keith Flach, Eddie Marshall, Kenny Tremont and Guy Sheldon will pose the greatest threats for tour travelers, while Frenchman Martin Roy, Patrick Dupree, Leon Gonyo, Aaron Bartemy and Saturday’s winner George Foley will be protecting the pavement in the Advance Series assault at Airborne.

Asphalt Adjustments: As the special event at Airborne will be the lone Advance Series stop on asphalt in 2009, the DIRTcar Rule Book will be in effect along with the following exceptions.
1. Points: Full series points will be awarded for the race but will include drivers running Big-Blocks only. All Big-Block series drivers must race a Big-Block powered car to be eligible for points.

14. Gear Rule for small blocks 6:03. No gear rule for Big Blocks.

Early Season Winners: The first full month of racing on the DIRTcar Northeast circuit is now in the books with more than a dozen tracks having hosted Big-Block Modified races and 31 drivers scoring victories in the 56 features run. Advance Series star ‘Super Matt’ Sheppard and Western PA favorite Kevin Bolland top the win chart with six apiece and are followed closely by Gypsum Express teammates Billy Decker (5), the reigning overall Mr. DIRTcar points king, and Pat Ward (4), the recently crowned Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Florida Tour champion. Sheppard’s Xtreme Lubricants teammate Jeff Brownell Jr. has scored three victories while Brett Hearn, Gary Tomkins, Frankie Caprara, Billy Dunn, Del Rougeux Jr. and Jeremiah Shingledecker are the only other drivers to double up during the 2009 campaign.

Integra Shocks Fast To Support Top Series Qualifiers: For a fourth straight year Integra Shocks will play an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series during the upcoming race season. The fast driver during 2009 Advance Auto Parts Series qualifying will once again earn the ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,400 value) at the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast Banquet in November. The Advance Auto Parts Series has recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first year the awards program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Advance Series race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a series-best total of 40 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past two decades.

Drivers will continue to draw for their order in the ‘Integra Shocks Time Trials’ at nearly every Advance Series stop, with the fast timer once again selecting a second pill to determine how many cars (0, 2, 3 or 4) will be inverted to start each preliminary heat race. The ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ winner will collect $100 and five (5) bonus points and the top-three heat race finishers will earn additional bonus points as follows: 1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. With this inversion format in place, a driver can now earn a maximum of 10 more points being the fast timer as well as a heat race winner.

JB Motorsports Goes To Xtreme With Race Award: Continuing to play a pivotal supporting role in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, JB Motorsports team owner Jeff Brownell Sr. has developed a unique award that will be handed out at each tour stop during the 2009 race season. An ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ award will be presented after every series show with the winner receiving $100 in product. A $500 cash bonus to the overall ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Year’ winner will be delivered during the DIRTcar Racing Northeast ‘Night of Champions’ Awards Banquet to be held at the Turning Stone Resort on November 14. The ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ will be determined by those Advance Series officials presiding over each event. The criteria does not limit the award winner to making a memorable move on the track, as any noteworthy action —avoiding an accident en route to the track or helping out a fellow competitor in the pits— on race day could sway voters when making their final decision. Veteran Central New York car owner Brownell boasts 40 years of experience in the oil business with 25 of those recognized nationally as a company owner.

Big Advance Series Stops Showcase ’09 Big-Block Campaign: The customary pre-race re-draw among top heat race qualifiers will continue to be in effect throughout the summer, with the season-ending show at the New York State Fairgrounds the only Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series stop awarding the fast timer with a pole-position start (heat points will not be awarded at this show). Continuing to rank among the most prestigious races in the country, the Rite Aid 200 at the N.Y.S. Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Oct. 11 is the only 200-lap race on the annual tour with the winner taking home $50,000. However, Super DIRT Week showdown is not the only prized jewel this season as the first-ever DIRTcar All-Star 100 at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on July 19 boasts a $20,000 winner’s share while another $17,500 sits on top for the winner of the Mr. DIRT Track, USA finale at Lebanon Valley Speedway on August 27. Syracuse remains the only Advance Auto Parts Series stops where the fast timer starts on the pole and the top-six are locked into front three row starting positions while heats will be aligned in heads-up fashion.

Syracuse SDW Starters Guaranteed From Series Success: Guaranteed starting berths in the Rite Aid 200 are once again up for grabs and in 2009 drivers will also be able to earn preferred starter status throughout the season for the richest DIRTcar Big-Block Modified event in the world. Winners of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series races and those among the top-12 in overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship points heading into Super DIRT Week comprise the core group of drivers receiving guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200. Preferred starters are the next eligible drivers finishing behind an Advance Auto Parts Series race winner that is already locked into the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, as well as all three DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Regional point champions and every licensed Big-Block Modified track champion crowned this year.

In order to take advantage of their guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200, Advance Series race winners and top-12 Mr. DIRTcar point-getters must run time trials. Any guaranteed driver that fails to qualify through time trials or a Triple 20 will be added to the Rite Aid field in order of heat race results. Those drivers holding preferred status are afforded up front starting positions in the Dig Safely New York last-chance qualifier on Sunday, Oct. 11 if unable to qualify while running under the clocks or in heat race competition. The balance of the Rite Aid 200 line-up is filled in from the Dig Safely New York Shootout with the 45th starting spot going to the best overall finisher in Cayuga County Fair Speedway’s ‘Win & You’re In’ Twin 25s on Sat., Oct. 10.

VP Official Race Fuel Of DIRTcar Northeast: The World Racing Group announced early in the year that VP Racing Fuels signed a multi-year agreement to become the Official Racing Fuel of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, all 12 divisions of DIRTcar Racing and UMP DIRTcar Racing, along with a number of regional touring series that fall under the DIRTcar banner. In the DIRTcar Racing Northeast Region, the only fuels allowed in the Big-Block Modified and 358-Modified divisions at sanctioned events will be VP110 and C12. The multi-faceted deal began with the season-opening Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park in February, where VP was the sole fuel supplier at the high speed, half-miler. VP Racing Fuels will roll out a program to quickly become a part of the fabric of DIRTcar Racing with aggressive promotional programs for DIRTcar sanctioned tracks, while giving the competitors a variety of incentive programs across all World Racing Group series, divisions and sanctioning bodies.

UPCOMING EVENT
In one of the only mid-week Advance Auto Parts Series events on tap throughout the entire season, THE BIG SHOW presented by veteran racer Brett Hearn at Orange County Fair Speedway arrives on June 17, with racers from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania set to converge on the ‘hard clay’ for the biggest event of the summer in Middletown. With the addition of a B-Main, the list of lap leader awards continues to grow with $2,000 up for grabs to the race-long pace-setters. Hearn is also in the process of securing a halfway bonus to bring the total to nearly $32,000 posted in prize money and contingency awards, with the 100-lap Modified main event paying to $6,000 to win.
