ABOUT THE TRACK
Canandaigua is a fast half-mile clay oval with Billy Decker establishing the single lap record in an Advance Auto Parts Series event last year when he circled the track in 17.125 seconds (105.109 mph) on August 9, 2007. Recently extending his all-time DIRTcar NorthEast record for consecutive titles to nine, Steve Paine used three feature wins over the summer to lock up his 10th track championship at the Ontario County Fairgrounds. Alan Johnson remains Canandaigua’s all-time win leader with 113 Big-Block Modified feature victories scored since 1975.

PREVIOUS WINNERS
Including a pair of 50-lappers run in early August that were swept by tour points leader Billy Decker, Canandaigua Speedway has now staged 40 events in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series modern-day era. Along with charter members Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Rolling Wheels Raceway Park and the New York State Fairgrounds, only six of the 45 host tracks have run more Advance Series races since the tour started in 1980. Past winners at Canandaigua include Lou Lazzaro (1980), Mike McLaughlin (1980), Jack Johnson (1981, 1987), Will Cagle (1981), Alan Johnson (1982, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2002-2), Don McGinnis (1983), Steve Paine (1985, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003), Danny Johnson (1986, 1989-2, 1991, 1995), Bob McCreadie (1990-2, 1993-2, 1994), Brett Hearn (1991, 2004, 2007), Kenny Tremont (1992), Joe Plazek (1997), Tim McCreadie (2003), Gary Tomkins (2005-06), Matt Sheppard (2006) and Decker, who logged his first win at the Routes 5 & 20 oval in 1998.

TRACK HISTORY
Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region, Canandaigua Speedway stands as one of the most revered ovals on the entire DIRTcar Racing NorthEast circuit. The popular half-miler has been in existence for over a half-century, with 2008 marking the 32nd season of stock car racing under the DIRTcar banner. First opening on Memorial Day in 1953, the “Fastlands of the Finger Lakes” gained instant notoriety with current DIRT Hall of Famers Dutch Hoag and Elmer Musclow turning it into a weekend home. Western New York standouts Billy Rafter, Kenny Meahl and Ed Ortiz as well as eastern invaders Pete Corey, Billy Wimble and Lou Lazzaro soon followed in victory lane, further showcasing some of the best Sportsman Modified talent in the Northeast. Future national Modified champion Jerry Cook captured the 1964 Canandaigua Speedlands’ points crown before the track temporarily closed. New management surfaced in 1972 and a second promoter in three years gave way to still more uncertainty. DIRT founder Glenn Donnelly took control of the Ontario County Fairgrounds’ speedplant in 1977 and offered instant stablility. He remained there until the end of 2004 when the organization was acquired by a new group of investors, today officially recognized as DIRTcar under the parent company World Racing Group. Names like Will Cagle, Merv Treichler, Mike McLaughlin, Alan and Danny Johnson, Bob McCreadie, Steve Paine, Canadian Joe Plazek and Billy Decker soon made the headlines, once and for all establishing the facility as the “Land of Legends” for generations to come. Currently some of the nation’s top short track stars —including Advance Auto Parts Series regulars Steve Paine, Gary Tomkins, Matt Sheppard and Justin Haers— can be found in Canandaigua every Saturday night throughout the summer months. The premier DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds are joined weekly by open-wheel Sportsman Modified and full-fender Street Stock and PureStox divisions with a number of specials mixed in between.

2008 RACE REVIEW
Billy Decker continued to ride the wave of success in the 2008 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series, capturing both ends of the Ferris Mowers Twin 50s on August 9 at Canandaigua Speedway to extend his lead even further after 15 of 27 scheduled point races. The Unadilla, New York veteran surpassed his own single-season Advance Series win mark by scoring a division-high seventh tour victory in the nightcap, giving him 46 on the all-time list to rank fifth. Decker’s only other Advance Series win at Canandaigua was registered in 1998 — the same year he claimed the track title as well as his first and only overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Championship. Dale Planck was just as consistent as Decker, securing runner-up honors in each segment while Canandaigua regulars Steve Paine (5th, 3rd) and Matt Sheppard (4th, 4th) also placed among the front-five on both occasions. Vic Coffey finished third in the opener and Justin Haers filed into fifth in the 50-lap finale, with both drivers earning preferred starter status in the prestigious Rite Aid 200 Championship race on Oct. 12 of Super DIRT Week XXXVII at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

With flashes of lightning illuminating the overcast sky and a storm lingering in the distance, outside pole-sitter Coffey jumped out front early in round one before Decker chased him down to take control on lap 28. Planck started 12th in the 31-car field, charged into fifth by the halfway mark and grabbed second exiting turn two in a magnificent three-wide maneuver on lap 46 that split low running Coffey and a lapped car. While starting third in the lid-lifter, Decker drew to invert the top-eight in the second twin leaving second-generation upstart Ryan Phelps to fill the first-place void on the grid. With the initial 35 laps run straight through under green, Phelps staved off numerous bids for the early lead by Alan Johnson before Coffey blasted high around both front-runners in another daring three-wide dash to take his second lead of the night on lap 11. Canandaigua points leader Paine ducked low in turn two to move to the point on lap 19, yet Decker’s LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell machine was too potent to handle and the ‘Franklin Flyer’ forged the third and final lead change with 20 laps still to go.

Along with gaining valuable Advance Series points during the year, each driver can now earn a maximum of 300 additional points from their best five hometrack feature race finishes. Using the standard DIRTcar NE weekly points format, a driver winning five features could carry up to 300 extra points (60 per win) into the Mr. DIRTcar Championship when track points are officially tallied after Labor Day.

Canandaigua Boasts ’08 Win Leaders: The middle of the September month has passed and 24 tracks have hosted DIRTcar Big-Block Modified races in 2008. Seven of the 58 drivers scoring victories in the 141 features run have taken checkered flags at Canandaigua Speedway including division leader Billy Decker (3 wins) who has amassed a circuit-high 22 triumphs in ‘08. Including a record-tying 10 in Advance Auto Parts Super Series competition aboard the potent LJL Racing Bicknell machine, Decker’s single-season best total nearly triples the output of popular Pennsylvanian Brian Swartzlander (8) while fellow Keystone State rivals Kevin Bolland and Jeremiah Shingledecker plus Advance Series standout Dale Planck rank right behind with seven each. Advance Series stars Brett Hearn, Matt Sheppard, Gary Tomkins and Alan Johnson own six wins apiece while tour regulars Jimmy Phelps (4), Steve Paine (3) and Frankie Caprara (3) and recent Lebanon Valley 200 Champion Andy Bachetti (3) are listed ahead of two-time winners Steve Hulsizer and Willy Decker from the Central New York circuit, Lebanon Valley regulars Kenny Tremont and Ryan Larkin, Orange County chauffeurs Jeff Heotzler and Chris Shultz, popular Pennsylvania pilot Del Rougeux Jr. and Canadian Pat O’Brien. Advance Series runners Justin Haers and 15 year-old sensation Larry Wight are among 37 more drivers having reached victory lane once heading down the stretch. Sheppard, Tomkins and Paine have also graced Canandaigua’s victory lane while Vic Coffey, Todd Burley and Haers have registered their only wins of the season at the Land of Legends.

Shocking Results For Series Fast Qualifiers: For a third straight year, Integra Shocks is playing an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series during the upcoming race season. The fast driver during 2008 Advance Auto Parts Series qualifying will once again earn the ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,400 value) at the DIRTcar Racing NorthEast ‘Night of Champions’ Banquet on November 15. The Advance Auto Parts Series has recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first year the awards program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Advance Series race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a series-best total of 38 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past two decades.

Drivers will continue to draw for their order in the ‘Integra Shocks Time Trials’ at nearly every Advance Series stop, with the fast timer once again selecting a second pill to determine how many cars (0, 2, 3 or 4) will be inverted to start each preliminary heat race. The ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ winner will collect $100 and five (5) bonus points and the top-three heat race finishers will earn additional bonus points as follows: 1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. With this inversion format in place, a driver can now earn a maximum of 10 more points being the fast timer as well as a heat race winner.

Grand Slam Showcases Series: The customary pre-race re-draw among top heat race qualifiers will continue to be in effect throughout the summer, with season-ending events at the New York State Fairgrounds and Orange County Fair Speedway the only Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series stops awarding fast timers with pole-position starts (heat points will not be awarded at these shows). Lebanon Valley Speedway and Rolling Wheels Raceway Park host the initial “200s” to make up the high-dollar Advance Series ‘Grand Slam’ in 2008.

Continuing to rank among the most prestigious races in the country, the Rite Aid 200 at the N.Y.S. Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Oct. 12, Eastern States 200 at Orange County on Oct. 19, Budweiser National 200 presented by Benjamin Moore Paints at Lebanon Valley on Sept. 7 and World Series Weekend BPG 200 at Rolling Wheels on Sept. 27 are the only 200-lap races on the annual tour. In 2008 these four signature events on the Advance Auto Parts Series formulate the prestigious ‘Grand Slam’ in DIRTcar Racing for Big-Block Modifieds.

In addition, the Lebanon Valley 200 winner (Andy Bachetti) is guaranteed the 7th starting spot in the Rite Aid 200 at Syracuse while the Rolling Wheels 200 winner automatically earns the 8th starting spot in the Rite Aid 200 fairgrounds finale. Tommy Meier was the first Orange County regular across the line in the Lebanon Valley 200 to earn the 7th starting spot in the Eastern States 200 line-up and the highest finishing OCFS regular driver (non-guaranteed) in the Rite Aid 200 clinches the 8th starting spot in the Eastern States 200.

This unique ‘Grand Slam’ features the $50,000-to-win Rite Aid 200 in the Salt City, $20,000-to-win Eastern States 200 in Middletown (NY), $10,000-to-win National 200 at the West Lebanon (NY) oval with another $10-grand on the line for the Rolling Wheels BPG National 200 winner. Syracuse and Orange County are the only Advance Auto Parts Series stops where the fast timers start on the pole and the top-six are locked into front three row starting positions while heats will be aligned in heads-up fashion. A special points system was implemented for these prominent races last season with each winner receiving 150 Series points and 50 points awarded to start.

Syracuse SDW Starters Guaranteed Through Series Success: Guaranteed starting berths in the Rite Aid 200 are once again up for grabs and in 2008 more drivers than ever before will be able to earn preferred starter status throughout the season for the richest DIRTcar Big-Block Modified event in the world. Winners of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series races and those among the top-12 in overall Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship points heading into Super DIRT Week comprise the core group of drivers receiving guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200. Preferred starters are the next eligible drivers finishing behind an Advance Auto Parts Series race winner that is already locked into the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, as well as all three DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Regional point champions and every licensed Big-Block Modified track champion crowned this year.

In order to take advantage of their guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200, Advance Series race winners and top-12 Mr. DIRTcar point-getters must run time trials. Any guaranteed driver that fails to qualify through time trials or a Triple 20 will be added to the Rite Aid field in order of heat race results. Those drivers holding preferred status are afforded up front starting positions in the Dig Safely New York last-chance qualifier on Sunday, Oct. 12 if unable to qualify while running under the clocks or in heat race competition. The balance of the Rite Aid 200 line-up is filled in from the Dig Safely New York Shootout with the 45th starting spot going to the best overall finisher in Cayuga County Fair Speedway’s ‘Win & You’re In’ Twin 25s on Sat., Oct. 11.
