For seven years, Darren Smith chased his first Super DIRTcar Series victory.
But as he enters his next Series appearance on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Georgetown Speedway, he has excitingly accomplished that feat, winning the Billy Whittaker Cars 200.
Earning that Super DIRT Week win was a career milestone that will always follow the Binghamton, NY driver. However, he said it still hasn’t set in yet.
“I don’t know what it’s supposed to feel like,” Smith said. “We’ve definitely watched it a handful of times. The first time we watched it on DIRTVision was pretty cool to see. But I guess it hasn’t really set in. There’s been a lot of people that reached out. It’s been pretty cool.”
Smith’s decision to put tires on with eight laps to go proved vital to winning the race, letting him work through the field and pass drivers on worn tires. But despite that choice to come down pit road, he said two key moments allowed him to charge to the win.
“I was expecting (Mat Williamson) to move up and block,” Smith said. “If he would’ve stayed in the rubber, I probably would’ve looked like the biggest idiot ever. I made sure I poked my nose to him getting into (Turn) 3, hoping he would come up and I would skirt underneath him.
“The biggest thing was getting by Jimmy (Phelps) and Alex (Yankowski) there and making sure you put yourself in position to make a move on the last corner.”
The Billy Whittaker Cars 200 victory capped one of Smith’s best seasons, in which earned nine victories and his fourth straight track title at Thunder Mountain Speedway. And while he’s been the driver to beat at Thunder Mountain over the past few seasons, he also earned another major accomplishment, winning the Big Block championship at Brewerton Speedway for the first time.
Winning the title at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon” was a major accomplishment not only for him, but also for veteran crew chief Scott Jeffery.
“We’ve been going to Brewerton for four years,” Smith said. “And having Scott on our team was cool, too, to have his family and team to do that with him. It’s kind of his stomping grounds. That was probably the coolest accomplishment we’ve had other than winning the 200. Now, we’d want to take a stab at a win at Charlotte; that’d be really cool.”
After winning at Oswego Speedway, he backed it up with a 358 Modified win at Hagerstown Speedway a week later. Now, he’ll turn his attention to the final four Super DIRTcar Series races of the season, the Mid-Atlantic Championship at Georgetown, and the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, Nov. 4-7.
In four races at the two tracks last season, he earned a top five and three top 10s, including a fourth in the season finale at Charlotte. That leaves Smith confident to end his season on a high note.
“We’ve showed up with two fast racecars to both of those tracks,” Smith said. “So, we’re definitely confident going into these races. We expect to do good, and if we win it’ll be pretty damn cool.”
Smith joins the Super DIRTcar Series for the Mid-Atlantic Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Georgetown Speedway in Georgetown, DE.
