The Saturday night Super DIRTcar Series show may have only been a preliminary performance, yet the precursor to the All-Star 100 on Sunday at Cayuga County Fair Speedway certainly provided an early glimpse of what is in store as rising series star Ryan Phelps held off all-time DIRTcar Big-Block Modified winner Alan Johnson to score his first career tour win to officially open All-Star Weekend at the Weedsport oval.

A teacher by trade during the off-season, Phelps was at the top of the class all night, time trailing fifth fastest in the 50-car field then finishing second in his qualifying heat before leading flag-to-flag in the 50-lap finale to collect the $3,000 first-place prize.

“We started off the year really good and went backwards a bit, so I guess the bar was raised for us a little and tonight we finally met that,” figured Phelps, 25, recognized more familiarly in the classroom on weekdays as an 11th grade history teacher at Newark (NY) High School where he also serves as the head coach of the wrestling team. In Central New York racing circles he’s fondly referred to as the ‘Rocket’ with the second-generation driver from Fulton, New York steering the Big Red Towing no. 99 Dave Miller Auto Body/Bicknell entry on weekends and in the demanding Super DIRTcar Series.

“Tomorrow we gotta try to do it when it really counts. And now we know we have a car that goes around Weedsport Speedway. This place doesn’t change much from week to week so hopefully we can have a good draw and have a good group for our time trials, start up front and drive right up through,” said Phelps, whose victory also marked his first-ever Big-Block triumph at the home of DIRTcar Racing Northeast.

Mired in traffic throughout most of the second half of the race, Johnson crossed the line in second a half straightaway behind followed by Matt Sheppard, Gary Tomkins and current series points leader Brett Hearn.

“At first it was two-wide traffic when I hit lapped cars and I said ‘man, this is bad’ I gotta get through here,’ remarked Phelps, who now stands eighth on the tour points chart through eight events following his second top-five tally of the season. “But once they started to spread out a little we were fine. I didn’t think I’d be getting my first series win this year. I set that as a goal but I don’t know how much I really believed it …. now we got one.”

Sheppard opened the program by capturing his second Integra Shocks Fast Time Award of the season and was clearly recognized as an early favorite to win the 50-lap nightcap after charging past Johnson with two to go to claim the 15-lap Exemption Dash — a special event that ultimately locked both he and runner-up Johnson into the pre-race draw for starting positions in the headline $20,000-to-win ‘All-Star 100’ set for Sunday at the fairgrounds.

Yet after Saturday’s re-draw among the Top-10 heat race qualifiers, Sheppard was shuffled back to fifth on the starting grid while Phelps was rewarded with the pole-position alongside front row partner Johnson.

Phelps and Johnson took off at the drop of the initial green and the lead duo was slowed by just one yellow flag when Tim Fuller suffered a flat left-rear tire to bunch the field for a lap eight restart. With green lights remaining on for the duration, Phelps did a masterful job once he reached traffic on lap 22, maneuvering both high and low seemingly at ease as the closest competition failed to match his speed up front.

“I didn’t know what to think, sometimes in these longer races you lose track of the laps and don’t know where you are,” admitted Phelps, who lapped up to 17th-place finisher Frankie Caprara in a race that lasted less than 18 minutes on the smooth Cayuga County 3/8-miler. “You’re just trying to be real focused. At the end I knew if I ran through the middle my dad would probably yell at me so I said I’ll go to the bottom and was able to hang in there the whole way.”

Certainly old enough to be his dad, runner-up Johnson couldn’t keep pace with the series upstart in his Bully’s Truck Stop no. 14J Raymond’s Car Care/Bicknell entry, with the last 43 laps run straight through under green.

“I certainly didn’t have anything for him,” admitted Johnson, 51, who owns an all-time DIRTcar-high 361 Big-Block feature wins with 51 registered in series competition. ‘A.J. Slideways’ began his Modified career in the early 1970s and raced at the same time Ryan’s father and current crew chief, Roger Phelps, ran a Late Model at The Port. “Thought maybe early on I could get him if he made a mistake, he just never made any. Then he got around lapped cars a little better than I could …. he was good.”

“We were lacking a little bit tonight, could’ve used more bite but it was still pretty good. If those other guys slow down a little bit, we should be alright (tomorrow),” figured Johnson, who hopes to make the All-Star 100 on Sunday evening his 62nd career win at Cayuga County. He remains the only driver to register at least one Big-Block win every year since the organization’s inception in 1976; now standing at 34 straight seasons.

Like Johnson, Sheppard was fast enough to get to the front yet not quick enough to slice through traffic and make a bid for the top spot like the red no. 99 that carried Phelps to the memorable win.

“We had a good car in the feature, we were about as fast as Alan but Ryan might’ve been a tick faster than us,” stated Sheppard, 26, who earned his sponsor’s Xtreme Lubricants ‘Slick Move of the Race’ award after pulling off a three-wide move en route to capturing the Exemption Dash earlier in the night. “The track went away a little bit for the feature, a little tougher to pass, the lapped cars definitely made it interesting.”

“I caught up to (Alan & Ryan) once and thought maybe we’d be able to give them a run, then I caught lapped traffic the wrong way and it kinda got stretched back out. I’m still happy having a good car all night and already looking forward to tomorrow with a lot more on the line,” added Sheppard, a member of this weekend’s ‘Super Team’ with Tim McCreadie, Pete Bicknell and Jeff Brownell Jr. aboard the JB Motorsports no. 9S Xtreme/Bicknell machine.

There’s little time to rest as Super DIRTcar Series teams prepare for Sunday’s history-making ‘All-Star 100’ with $20,000 waiting for the winner of the inaugural 100-lap Modified main event that boasts $1,000 just to start the richest short-track race ever staged for Big-Blocks.

Fairgrounds Fan-Fest
: Not only was the track a busy place to be for race fans on Saturday, the surrounding fairgrounds midway remained active throughout the day offering plenty of side shows before, during and after the speedway program. Smoke from the Weedsport Fire Dept. Chicken BBQ filled the air most of the afternoon as the turn four pavilion area was the site of “All-Star Fan Zone” featuring a Dunk Tank, Bouncy Boxing, Sumo Wrestling, Bungee Run and an Inflatable Hoop. Both drivers and fans contended in a “Cornhole Challenge” (beanbag toss) while some of the favorites also participate in an all-out “Tug of War.” Judging begins Sunday at 2pm in Mike’s Hard Lemonade All-Star Weekend World Tailgating Championship with numerous awards up for grabs including ‘best of show.’

Pot Holes: Plenty of television time afforded by Syracuse stations to the Big-Block boys as Time-Warner Cable News 10 Now cameras shot clips up close and personal with Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard, Gary Tomkins and Brett Hearn, while interviews were given to cousins Jimmy and Ryan Phelps and Dale Planck by ABC affiliate WSYR-TV 9…..Voices of veteran announcers Brian Mulligan and Doug Elkins bellowed across the fairgrounds describing the action on opening day of All-Star Weekend…..Xtreme Lubricants-JB Motorsports teams cars of Matt Sheppard, Jeff Brownell Jr. and Tim McCreadie were the fastest in their individual time trial groups with ‘Super Matt’ claiming his second Integra Shocks Fast Time Award of the season and all three finishing in the Top-10 on the final feature race results sheet.
