With the 2025 Super DIRTcar Series championship within his grasp, Mat Williamson opened this year’s World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte on a high note.

The St. Catharines, ON driver was the fastest overall in both Qualifying Sessions on Wednesday night and will start on the pole of his Heat Races on Thursday and Friday.

It’s “Money Mat’s” fifth and sixth Billy Whittaker Cars Quick Time Awards of the 2025 season, two Qualifying runs, he said, that were helped by returning to old notes.

“We went back to our notes from 2023,” Williamson said. “I thought we were better in 2023 than we have been ever. We unloaded with those notes, and obviously we were fast enough to set quick time.

“I didn’t lift on either lap (in the first session). Obviously, we got a really good car where I can carry speed into the corner. The first lap I ran on the cushion in (Turns) 3 and 4, and the second lap I actually ran lower, and that was my better one.”

After laying down a 15.979-second lap in the Thursday night session, Williamson backed it up about an hour later with a 16.047-second lap in the Friday night session. According to the defending Series champion, it sets him up to be in a good position on all three nights.

“I think anytime we’ve come down here and timed on Wednesday, we’ve always had one good night and one bad night,” Williamson said. “To be pole in both is going to mean a lot on Saturday night. It’s going to get a pretty good starting spot for Saturday if you run well on Thursday and Friday.”

Joining Williamson on the pole of the four Heat Races on Thursday are Matt Sheppard (Heat 1), Alex Payne (Heat 2), and Felix Roy (Heat 4).

Sheppard (Heat 4) and Payne (Heat 2) also earned pole positions for Friday night’s program along with Williamson. Logan Watt, who was the Quickest in Group B in the Friday night session, will start on the pole of Heat Race 3.
