WHAT
The 2009 Super DIRTcar Series returns as the major attraction during the inaugural edition of DIRTcar All-Star Weekend at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport, New York. Three straight days of trackside activity —including Sportsman, Street Stock, CRSA (Capital Region Sprint Agency) 305 Sprint, Pro Late Model and Xcel 600 Modified racing— on the historic 3/8-miler culminate Sunday, July 19 with the headline ‘All-Star 100’ boasting a first-place cash prize of $20,000 to the Big-Block Modified winner from the total weekend purse approaching $100,000. On tap for Saturday is a $3,000-to-win, 50-lap Super DIRTcar Series preliminary points event, with each Big-Block qualifier also contending in a unique ‘Exemption Dash’ offering a full purse. The winner of both Modified mains also earns valuable points towards the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship and receives an automatic starting berth in the prestigious Rite Aid 200 on October 11 of Super DIRT Week XXXVIII at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

ABOUT THE TRACK
Cayuga County is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval with weekly shows held on Sundays throughout the summer. Alan Johnson established the single lap record in a Super DIRTcar Series event when he circled the track in 15.647 seconds (86.279 mph) on Sept. 3, 2006. Once again on top of the CCFS standings with eight of the top-11 slots filled by touring drivers, ‘A.J. Slideways’ is also the defending Cayuga County season points champion. Johnson captured the ’09 season-opener in Weedsport with Steve Paine (2), Billy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Chad Phelps and Chad Homan taking the other Modified checkered flags at The Port this season.

PREVIOUS WINNERS
Although All-Star Weekend makes its debut this season on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds, the hub of DIRTcar Racing in the Northeast has run off 44 Big-Block Modified features since tour events counted towards the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship in 1980. Danny Johnson (8) tops the truly all-star list of 15 drivers that have captured extra-distance victories at The Port, followed closest by the legendary ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie (7) and Alan Johnson (6), with Billy Decker (4), his mentor Jack Johnson (4), second-generation standout Tim McCreadie (3), Tim Fuller (3) and current Super DIRTcar Series points leader Brett Hearn (2) the only other repeat winners. The precursor to the All-Star 100 at Cayuga County was the ‘Northeast Championship’ that began in September 1972 and continued through 1989, with the Modified main extended from 150 to 200 laps in between. Floridian Will Cagle was in total command of the extra-distance shows staged at the fairgrounds, copping six of the first seven 150-lap Northeast title runs while popular Pennsylvanian Kenny Brightbill claimed the 200-lap finale in ’89.

TRACK HISTORY
For many years known as Weedsport Speedway, the Cayuga County Fair Speedway and surrounding fairgrounds have grown in both size and stature since the early era of stock car racing. Under the guidance of Drivers Independent Race Tracks founder Glenn Donnelly, the modernized facility has gained national recognition as the headquarters of DIRTcar Racing Northeast and site of the Northeast Modified Hall of Fame and Classic Car Museum. One of three founding-member speedways in 1976 when DIRTcar was formed, the 2009 season marks Cayuga County’s 55th consecutive year of stock car racing with the first event staged in July of 1955. When Stanley Dudzinski first began carving out a third-mile oval in his berry patch using railroad ties to mark the frontstretch wall, he never dreamed that five decades later the same field would become synonymous with the leading short-track sanctioning body of dirt racing in the country and offer nationally televised —today webcast to surfers around the world— Big-Block Modified events. This season over 25 race dates were inked to include open-wheel Modified, winged Sprint Car, full-fender Pro Late Model, Street Stock and BattleKarz racing, with events running from the end of April through Super DIRT Week in October.

2008 RACE REVIEWS
MAY: In a matter of weeks, Dale Planck doubled his career output as he put the RezX Racing no. 77x Grow It Hydroseeding-Action Race Parts/TEO in victory lane Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway after capturing the Super DIRTcar Series Hall of Fame Classic presented by Ferris Mowers. Planck’s fourth career Series win was his second-ever Big-Block Modified triumph at the home of DIRTcar Northeast and netted him the $6,000 top prize plus pulled him to within three points of leader Brett Hearn in his bid for the elusive overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship. The 76-lap Modified main was slowed by just three caution periods with third-place starter Planck grabbing the lead from pole-sitter Justin Haers on lap 21 and outlasting last year’s Hall of Fame Classic co-winner Danny Johnson to claim the decisive victory. Reigning Cayuga County points king Jimmy Phelps charged into third at the stripe followed by Tim Fuller and Haers while two-time and ’07 Syracuse Rite Aid 200 Champion Vic Coffey kicked off the holiday weekend activity by setting his first-ever Series fast time in Integra Shocks Time Trials.

SEPTEMBER: For the second straight year it was open-wheel veterans Alan Johnson and Billy Decker sharing the spotlight in victory lane over Labor Day Weekend at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, with each scoring $3,000 wins in the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified Budweiser Twin 54s presented by Taylor Rental on Sunday night. ‘A.J. Slideways’ started fifth in the lid-lifter, methodically worked his way forward in the Spra-King Racing no. 1J Jake Spraker Used Cars & Trucks/Bicknell mount, and took advantage of the only caution on lap 38 to overtake race-long leader Frankie Caprara en route to a decisive two-second victory. Caprara settled for runner-up honors followed by Dale Planck, Gary Tomkins and Jimmy Phelps.

For the nightcap, Johnson re-drew ‘9’ to invert the first five rows of the grid yet as soon as the green flag flew to begin round two, a mid-pack tangle involving a half-dozen cars forced an early slowdown. Back under green flag conditions, Justin Haers out-dragged front row partner Matt Sheppard to take an early lead in the 54-lapper and was able to hold off ‘Super Matt’ until the Waterloo, New York native was finally able to find make a clean pass low to complete lap 12. While Johnson waited patiently to move forward in the opening race, Decker was far more forceful in the after the sun set as he blasted high aboard the LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int’l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell machine to move from fourth to second on a lap 13 restart, disposing of Sheppard on lap 15 with Tomkins following in pursuit just two laps later. Tomkins completed his mission to the front on the 21st circuit and for a dozen laps the top-two jockeyed for position both high and low in and out of traffic. Decker forged the final lead change high across the line to complete lap 32, with Tomkins managing to creep up to a single car-length at the wire followed by Planck, Sheppard and Alan Johnson to round out the front-five at the stripe.

Along with gaining valuable Series points during the year, each driver can now earn a maximum of 360 additional points (60 per event) from participation in six feature races at their hometrack when Mr. DIRTcar Championship points are officially tallied after Labor.

Billy Decker was crowned Mr. DIRTcar Champion in 2008, with his initial title taken exactly 10 years earlier in 1998. Chalking up a record-tying 10 Series feature wins in ‘08, the ‘Franklin Flyer’ grabbed the points lead early in June and never wavered the rest of the way as he secured DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s highest Big-Block Modified honor for owners John & Laura Wight and the Gypsum Wholesalers Team. Jimmy Phelps overtook Dale Planck for second in the season-finale, with ’04 champion Gary Tomkins also moving past all-time Series champion Brett Hearn in the last race to fill out the front-five. 2008 Big-Block Modified Rookie of the Year Larry Wight finished 14th on the final points chart.

Fanfare Galore At Fairgrounds: All-Star Weekend ’09 will be a fan-fest like no other once campers start rolling onto the Cayuga County Fairgrounds to officially kick off the ‘Super DIRT Week of the Summer’ at the birthplace of DIRTcar Modified Racing. Reserved campsites begin loading up at 9am on Thursday, July 16 and general campers join the party Friday morning in anticipation of the richest motorsports event ever staged in 54 years at The Port. The track comes alive at 6:30pm with a CSRA Sprint Car/DIRTcar Street Stock doubleheader, along with the first sightings of Big-Block Modifieds for a handful of early practice sessions. Getting underway in and around the turn four pavilion area, “All-Star Fan Zone” opens Saturday at 11am with smoke beginning to arise from the Weedsport Fire Dept. Chicken BBQ slated to start serving at 12noon. Infield “Park & Thrill” gates are unlocked at 3pm and action on the track for Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds, Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman and DIRTcar Pro Late Models preempts ‘live’ music after hours in Club All-Star. The fan zone re-opens on Super Sunday at 11am with DIRTcar drivers taking on the most avid short-track fanatics in the first-ever “Cornhole Challenge” at 1pm while some of the favorites will also participate in an all-out “Tug of War.” Judging in Mike’s Hard Lemonade All-Star Weekend World Tailgating Championship begins at 2pm when gates once more swing open for the ultimate infield Park & Thrill experience. Throughout the day “All-Star Fan Zone” will be attracting both young and old to witness drivers & dignitaries soaking it up in the Dunk Tank, and participate in Bouncy Boxing, Sumo Wrestling, Bungee Run and Inflatable Hoop happenings, with the National Guard and VP Racing Fuels setting up mobile displays on-site as a DJ mixes tunes into the festivities. Back on the speedway, Xcel 600 Modifieds lead off this unprecedented spectacle of speed before all the fanfare comes to a head with the historic running of the inaugural $20,000-to-win All-Star 100 for Big-Blocks.

Northeast Notables: The DIRTcar All-Star 100 marks the revival of the ‘Northeast Championship’ title race that once attracted the biggest stars and best cars to Weedsport every September during the 1970s and 80s. The 2009 summer spectacular comes exactly 20 years after Pennsylvania legend Kenny Brightbill captured the last 200-lap interstate event, while Floridian Will Cagle claimed the initial 150-lap autumn affair in 1972. In between, many of the greatest Modified drivers ever to turn a wheel in the Big-Block ranks have hoisted the hardware at Cayuga County, and the top touring teams of today’s modern era are anxious to begin a new tradition when the inaugural All-Star 100 arrives.

Integra Shocks Fast To Support Top Series Qualifiers: For a fourth straight year Integra Shocks will play an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Super DIRTcar Series during the upcoming race season. The fast driver during 2009 Series qualifying will once again earn the ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,400 value) at the DIRTcar Racing Northeast Banquet in November. The Series has recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first year the awards program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Series race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a series-best total of 40 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past two decades.

Drivers will continue to draw for their order in the ‘Integra Shocks Time Trials’ at nearly every tour stop, with the fast timer once again selecting a second pill to determine how many cars (0, 2, 3 or 4) will be inverted to start each preliminary heat race. The ‘Integra Shocks Fast Time Award’ winner will collect $100 and five (5) bonus points and the top-three heat race finishers will earn additional bonus points as follows: 1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. With this inversion format in place, a driver can now earn a maximum of 10 more points being the fast timer as well as a heat race winner.

JB Motorsports Goes To Xtreme With Race Award: Continuing to play a pivotal supporting role in the Big-Block Super DIRTcar Series, JB Motorsports team owner Jeff Brownell Sr. has developed a unique award that will be handed out at each tour stop during the 2009 race season. An ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ award will be presented after every series show with the winner receiving $100 in product. A $500 cash bonus to the overall ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Year’ winner will be delivered during the DIRTcar Racing Northeast ‘Night of Champions’ Awards Banquet to be held at the Turning Stone Resort on November 14. The ‘Xtreme Lubricants Slick Move of the Race’ will be determined by those Series officials presiding over each event. The criteria does not limit the award winner to making a memorable move on the track, as any noteworthy action —avoiding an accident en route to the track or helping out a fellow competitor in the pits— on race day could sway voters when making their final decision. Veteran Central New York car owner Brownell boasts 40 years of experience in the oil business with 25 of those recognized nationally as a company owner.

Super-sized Series Stops Showcase ’09 Big-Block Campaign: The customary pre-race re-draw among top heat race qualifiers will continue to be in effect throughout the summer, with the season-ending show at the New York State Fairgrounds the only Super DIRTcar Series stop awarding the fast timer with a pole-position start (heat points will not be awarded at this show). Continuing to rank among the most prestigious races in the country, the Rite Aid 200 at the N.Y.S. Fairgrounds in Syracuse on Oct. 11 is the only 200-lap race on the annual tour with the winner taking home $50,000. However, Super DIRT Week showdown is not the only prized jewel this season as the first-ever DIRTcar All-Star 100 at Cayuga County Fair Speedway on July 19 boasts a $20,000 winner’s share while another $17,500 sits on top for the winner of the Mr. DIRT Track, USA finale at Lebanon Valley Speedway on August 27. Syracuse remains the only Series stop where the fast timer starts on the pole and the top-six are locked into front three row starting positions while heats will be aligned in heads-up fashion.

Syracuse SDW Starters Guaranteed From Series Success: Guaranteed starting berths in the Rite Aid 200 are once again up for grabs and in 2009 drivers will also be able to earn preferred starter status throughout the season for the richest DIRTcar Big-Block Modified event in the world. Winners of the Super DIRTcar Series races and those among the top-12 in overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Modified Championship points heading into Super DIRT Week comprise the core group of drivers receiving guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200. Preferred starters are the next eligible drivers finishing behind an Series race winner that is already locked into the Rite Aid 200 starting grid, as well as all three DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Regional point champions and every licensed Big-Block Modified track champion crowned this year.

In order to take advantage of their guaranteed starting positions in the Rite Aid 200, Series race winners and top-12 Mr. DIRTcar point-getters must run time trials. Any guaranteed driver that fails to qualify through time trials or a Triple 20 will be added to the Rite Aid field in order of heat race results. Those drivers holding preferred status are afforded up front starting positions in the Dig Safely New York last-chance qualifier on Sunday, Oct. 11 if unable to qualify while running under the clocks or in heat race competition.
