Latest points update after Weedsport Speedway and Lebanon Valley
Take a look at the most recent points update and the latest movers with three races down in the quest for the 2023 Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified championship.
LATEST RACE(S): Weedsport Speedway (May 28), Lebanon Valley Speedway (May 29)
CURRENT POINTS LEADER: Mat Williamson notched his second win of the points-paying season at Weedsport Speedway, his sixth win in the last eight Series matchups. He followed it up with an eighth-place finish at Lebanon Valley Speedway the next night. Williamson currently holds a razor thin three-point margin over second place Matt Sheppard.
MOVERS:
Matt Sheppard (+4): After a seventh-place finish at Bridgeport Speedway to open up the championship season, Sheppard notched a third-place finish at Weedsport Speedway on the first night of the Memorial Day Weekend doubleheader. The next day, he scored his 90th career Series win at Lebanon Valley Speedway. With the win, he sits three points behind leader Mat Williamson.
Jimmy Phelps (+7): Phelps used his home track advantage at Weedsport Speedway to make a last lap pass on Matt Sheppard to score his first podium finish of the season, finishing in second place. He scored one of his best career finishes at Lebanon Valley Speedway the next day in a 100-lap contention, finishing in fifth. The two consistent finishes leave Phelps sitting third in points going into June.
DARREN SMITH (-1): Smith faced a challenging swing for the Series first visit to New York State; he placed 17th on night one at Weedsport Speedway but managed a top-10 finish at Lebanon Valley Speedway. The Binghamton, NY native now sits fourth in points.
PETER BRITTEN (+12): After suffering a DNF at Bridgeport, Britten made a solid rebound scoring his first top-five finish of the season at Weedsport, finishing in fourth. He notched a top-10 finish the next day at Lebanon Valley Speedway, bumping him 12 spots in the points battle to fifth.
TIM SEARS JR. (+2): A seventh-place finish at Weedsport Speedway balanced out a 14th-place finish at Lebanon Valley for the central New York resident. At the weekend’s conclusion, Sears Jr. sat just outside of the top-five standings in sixth.
MIKE MAHANEY (+12): Mahaney had a successful first swing in the Empire State, scoring a top-10 finish on night one at Weedsport Speedway and then a second-place finish at Lebanon Valley Speedway. With those results, the Kings Ferry, NY native jumped up 12 spots in the points to seventh.
CHRIS HILE (+1): Chris Hile came into the Memorial Day Weekend doubleheader sitting seventh in points after a top-10 finish at Bridgeport. He started off with his first top-five finish of the season at Weedsport Speedway. He took the good with the bad, finishing 26th at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
MAX MCLAUGHLIN (-2): McLaughlin faced a difficult swing to the Empire State, finishing middle of the pack both nights. After notching a sixth-place finish at Bridgeport Speedway, the Mooresville, NC resident finished 13th at his home track Weedsport Speedway. The next evening, he finished 17th, dropping him two spots in points into ninth place.
ANTHONY PERREGO (+5): Perrego found some success over the Memorial Day Weekend, logging a sixth-place finish at Weedsport Speedway. His first top-10 finish of the season was a major factor in jumping five spots in the points battle heading into June.
STEVE BERNARD (+3): The Granby, QC native continues to adjust to racing on American tracks. His has finished in the top-15 in the three races of the season thus far. After a 12th place finish at Lebanon Valley Speedway, he moved up three spots to 11th place in the points race.
ADAM PIERSON (-1): Hampered by a difficult finish at Weedsport Speedway, Pierson dropped one spot in the points standings after the weekend in New York State. He managed to finish weekend swing off with a respectable 11th place finish at Lebanon Valley Speedway to remain in contention to break into the top-10.
MATHIEU DESJARDINS (+3): After suffering a DNF to start the season at Bridgeport, the rookie Series driver battled back. He has yet to crack the top-10 in finishes, but his steady improvement makes the rest of his season look promising. Desjardins moved up three spots to 15th.
The top 20 also saw several new names: Larry Wight (14th), Ronnie Davis III (16th), Felix Roy (17th), CG Morey (18th) and Marcus Dinkins (19th) all moved up the leaderboard.
