To say that Jimmy Phelps has had a frustrating start to his Australian racing campaign is an understatement. The Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar series standout returned to the Lismore Speedway for the second night of the Modified Masters event on Sunday only to sustain major damage early in his heat race, severely hampering his efforts during the night.

Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series regular Jimmy Phelps had a tough introduction to Modified racing ‘Down Under’ on Saturday night (Jan 24) with persistent fuel problems hampering the performance of his JBR Motorsport Troyer entry. Phelps is competing in the inaugural ‘Modified Masters’ two-night event at the Lismore Speedway and is behind the wheel of the specially themed JBR Motorsport Troyer of Simon Jupe.

Danny Johnson saved his best for last as he scored his first Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series win of the season Sunday afternoon in the 47th running of the Eastern States 200 Big-Block Modified Championship at Orange County Fair Speedway. Johnson’s fifth career win in the nation’s longest-running short-track event of its kind was the second straight for car owner Mike Petruska and DJ’s first DIRTcar victory of the season was worth $20,000 for the Atlas Paving no. Frank Cozze has been coming to the New York State Fairgrounds landmark oval for 40 years. Sunday afternoon proved to be more than a happy ending for the Keystone State Modified veteran as he captured the biggest DIRTcar Modified victory of his career in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Rite Aid 200 to close out the 37th edition of Super DIRT Week on the storied Syracuse Mile.

Modified veteran Pat Ward was relegated to the last chance qualifier, then left no doubt as he led flag-to-flag to capture top honors Sunday at the New York State Fairgrounds in the Dig Safely New York Shootout on the final day of competition during Super DIRT Week XXXVII. Ward out-dragged front row Gypsum teammate Roy Bresnahan from his outside pole-position start on the first trip around the Syracuse Mile and led the entire distance in the 20-lap last chance qualifier.

Following a rigid full-fender schedule has done little to affect the open-wheel expertise of former DIRTcar Big-Block Modified standout Tim Fuller as the Edwards, New York driver bested a stellar field of 63 Modifieds taking time on Thursday afternoon to earn the pole-position start for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series Rite Aid 200 scheduled for Sunday at the New York State Fairgrounds. Fuller was the fifth from last driver in the fourth of five groups to take time and the 2004 Rite Aid Champion made the best of the late afternoon assignment, winning the $2,500 American Traditions Motorsports Pole Award after touring the historic Syracuse Mile in a one-lap clocking of 30.160 sec. (119.363 mph).

The New York State Fairgrounds got back on track Wednesday afternoon as the Big-Block Modifieds were in town to open trackside activity and kick off Super DIRT Week for the 37th straight year. Customary technical inspections led off activities in the morning under the main grandstands and when the first green flag flew after 2:30 p.m., more than 80 cars were ready to make their mark on the Moody Mile during the two-hour hot lap session.
